UPDATE: Rocky Point Woman Killed in Crash Near Rocky Point Preserve

Police said the crash occurred south of Whiskey Road, in Middle Island.

Update: Police said that a Rocky Point woman was killed in a crash late Thursday afternoon after someone veered into her lane and struck her as she was driving.

Patricia Moon, 51, was killed in the crash after police said the driver of a 2007 Mercedes-Benz veered into an oncoming lane of traffic. Moon was driving a 2003 Hyundai Elantra northbound on Yaphank-Rocky Point Road at 4:50 p.m. when police said a Sound Beach woman entered the northbound lane, striking Moon's car.

Both cars were impounded for safety inspections, and police said the investigation is ongoing.

A car crash in the Rocky Point State Preserve late Thursday afternoon left one person dead and another injured.

According to Suffolk County Police, shortly before 5 p.m. two drivers – one in a Mercedes and another in a Hyundai Elantra – were involved in a crash on Rocky Point-Yaphank Road, on the southern end of the preserve at Whiskey Road.

Both drivers were transported to Stony Brook University Hospital, where the driver of the Elantra was pronounced dead. The condition of the driver of the Mercedes – which police said caught fire in the crash – remains unknown.

Police said the investigation is continuing, and identification of the victim is pending notification of next of the victim's family.
