UPDATE: Oxygen Bar to be Shut Down After Shooting

Announcement will be made at 2 p.m. to shut down bar after four people were injured in shooting early Saturday morning.

An announcement that Oxygen Bar in Rocky Point will be shut down is expected to be made at a 2 p.m. press conference at the bar Monday, according to Town spokesman Jack Krieger.

Expected to attend the press conference are Town Supervisor Mark Lesko, Councilwoman Jane Bonner and County Legislator Sarah Anker

A letter from State Sen. Kenneth P. LaValle sent to the New York State Liquor Authority stated:

"This particular nightclub is no stranger to controversy and violence. In early 2010, when the establishment was known as The Edge, a club patron was stabbed three times during an altercation. In August 2009 the club and its owners planned a wet T-shirt contest and Jell-O wrestling match. The event was cancelled after community protest.

"I know the the New York Liquor State Authority works diligently to ensure the residents of New York are protected and ask the Authority to review the status of the Oxygen Bar’s license as it relates to the safety of its patrons."

Patch will have more details from the press conference at 2 p.m. The announcement comes on the heels of a shooting early Saturday morning:

Suffolk County Police responded to a 911 call of shots being fired at Oxygen Bar night club in Rocky Point at 3:31 a.m. Saturday to find three women with gunshot wounds.

The women were transported to in a Rocky Point ambulance, Suffolk Police said. One man suffered a gunshot wound and was taken by a friend to before the police arrived.

Two of the women were shot in the leg and the third was shot in the foot. The man suffered a gunshot wound to his leg and was also grazed by a bullet in his torso, police said.

"No arrests have been made," said Seventh Precinct Detective Sgt. John Best.  "There was a disturbance inside the bar and it was only one shooter. No injuries are life threatening. Two of the female victims were admitted to Stony Brook and two were discharged."

The night club, formerly known as The Edge but renamed to Oxygen Bar in late 2010, has a past history of incidents. On March 20, 2010, a victim was stabbed three times in an early Saturday morning altercation at the club. Police were also called for a fight at the club last February.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information regarding the shooting should contact Seventh Squad detectives at 631-852-8752 or call anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said of "multiculturalism": "We kidded ourselves aRead More while. We said: 'They won't stay, [after some time] they will be gone,' but this isn't reality. And of course, the approach [to build] a multicultural [society] and to live side by side and to enjoy each other ... has failed, utterly failed." There is something to be said for a healthy sense of Nationalism and Cultural Integrity.

Bravo MP Majority, very well said.Teachers are the most protected job on the planet. Now if theyRead More could only earn that money by producing results in the classrooms like they used to. But I also blame the absent NO vote. They need to be sent a message-we need a majority no vote but that will never happen. Glad I am out of here in 2 years. Can't imagine trying to live here and pay these taxes on social security and my 401K that tanked in 2008 while I was making up the teachers loss on their pension and paying my health insurance & theirs at the same time. So boo hoo teachers you have to spend money on the kids while I spend money on you.

Spoken like a true teacher. Did you know that the average school teacher is only paying 15% of theRead More actual cost of health care premiums for themselves and their families, when Medical healthcare insurance premiums are rising at an alarming 17% per annum? Do you realize that teachers are paid an additional stipend if they work more than 3 consecutive periods in a day? Are you aware that teacher pensions were protected during the stock market crash of 2008, when the average person's 401K was totally at risk? Perhaps if teachers realized how good they have it - look at the BIG picture and outside of their bubble - then they would complain less. Oh and yes, we need our loftily-paid Administrators to kick in some of the salaries, to help pay for stuff. Hard to believe the school districts' mantras that "it's all for the kids".
