Sue the State if in an accident. 25A (a state road) is designed by the state and should be held responsible for accidents that weren't caused by stupidity. The whole road from Miller Place to Mt. Sinai is poor. Echo and 25A should be part of a campain. Not everyone can be wrong.

The problem is the center turning lane, better known as the suicide lane. You should not have uncontrolled left turns permitted across two lanes of heavy traffic. The problem is not speed, its the turns. Build a center median, have controlled intersections or a traffic circle somewhere between miller place road and the Rocky Point boundary.

I totally agree, RPSteve! I wish your suggestions are implemented, and fast!

There is absolutely nothing wrong with that intersection. I pass through there and use that turn lane multiple times daily and I can say that the cause of these accidents is from people flying through the red light right after it turns yellow. I have personnaly seen 2 accidents there in the last year and that was the cause. As much as I do not agree with red light cameras, I feel installing one at major intersections would prevent people from attempting to beat the red light and in turn prevent accidents.

"Not everyone can be wrong" True, but unlike arguments and fights (where it takes two to tango), auto accidents very often occur because only one person did something stupid or careless. Driving defensively was always the the thing I stressed most to my kids when they were learning to drive. The lesson was "expect somebody around you to do something stupid - you won't be disappointed, and more importantly you won't be surprised".

We don't need cameras, who is benefitting with that idea??? What we need at both intersections, Miller Pl Rd and in Rocky Point, we need RED lights for left turns and no Right on red. If you saw RED you would not be making a risky left across oncoming traffic. If you look at everyother light along Nesconset Hwy all the way west to the mall, every intersection has RED for left turns. Instead of allowing a left by chance which is what the State is doing by not making you stop and wait till it's clear to turn. It is telling you to go ahead see if you can make it on your own. Is it obvious, some people can't and as a result you have accidents. When will the State or Brookhaven Hwy. make the changes that are so simple to make and then see how many accidents there are. Same goes for Echo, why would you let traffic go when you have oncoming traffic. Why is there no red light for the right turns? It should be red until the left turn lane is going. Why would you let traffic try to merge to the left with on-coming traffic. Wouldn't it make sense to let them go when the west bound is stopped, then if they want to go left at the light of Patch-Mt.Sinai they aren't crossing traffic. So simple to fix, what would it take to do this????

Irene has hit the nail on the head. I've been saying this for years. Stop allowing right on red and NOT having a red turn arrow. If you look at how these accidents are happening and seeing them firsthand (which 2 in recent days even I have at both the Miller Place Rd intersection AND Hallock Landing Rd) you can see that it's about beating that light to turn red and making a go for it because in a way, they can. We are one of the only places left that still have right on red that I know of. If you go to any of the 5 boroughs of NY, it's not legal, so why here? The congestion is getting worse here as well as the habits of drivers. It's a simple fix to make things that much safer on the roads. Cameras don't help but making the lights correspond with the traffic flow do. How many more injuries will it take for the right people to listen?

Not saying these are bad ideas, but since the problem seems to be that "it's about beating that light to turn red and making a go for it" then what's to stop people from rushing to beat a red turning arrow? If people are going to ignore the law, then they're going to ignore the law no matter how many signs/lights/arrows/cameras get put up. Same goes for Right-on-Red, were the law says you're supposed to come to a complete stop (that means 0 mph folks) first and proceed only when it's safe to do so. I've lost count of the times I've seen people turn after a "rolling stop" or completely blow through the light while turning right. BTW, we're FAR FROM the only place that still has Right-on-Red - you can't go by NYC, where driving is a whole different game. The 5 boroughs also have a max speed of 50mph on their highways, how well do you think that would go over out here? Government laws and regulations are never going to completely protect us from every idiot out there... sh*t is always going to happen. You have to do your best to drive defensively and expect the unexpected, so you're not surprised when somebody does something stupid.

Right on red is completely different. Right on red is a merge with traffic and is relatively safe. The LEFT turns are head-on and t-bone collisions. You need to eliminate the random left turns across traffic, and control the lefts at the intersection with traffic lights like a red arrow. No turn on red and reducing the speed limit are worthless moves that serve no safety purpose, they are only to increase revenue oppurtunity for traffic tickets. The only time there should be no rght on red is a blind turn or a hill with reduced visibility.

This accident would not have been avoided by this suggestion. This was caused by a young driver not paying attention to the stopped traffic in front of her and rear-ending someone. I do agree that this may help some future accidents.

When 25a was widened business protested a center median....I personally have had a few close calls on center lane. vehicles heading right for me, very scary you cant go right or left.. Also MProad and 25 a has 2 gas stations 2fast foods 7 11 gings country point, put this all together, and you have an accident just waiting to loom. We need action now ...
