Suffolk Police Step Up School Area Patrols in Light of CT Tragedy

SCPD says increase is a proactive measure and schools are still safest place for students.

Suffolk County Police are stepping up patrols around schools, using both marked and unmarked vehicles, as a proactive measure in light of the elementary school massacre last Friday in Connecticut.

“We are increasing patrols for the near future and we are aware of the concerns of parents, teachers, and students in light of that tragedy. There is no specific threat to any area,” Deputy Inspector Kevin Fallon told Patch in a phone interview Tuesday.

“This is a proactive precaution and reasonable action,” he said, noting that police officers have continually undertaken extensive training regarding active shooter scenarios.

The SCPD, Fallon said, has paid constant attention to potential school district violence long before Friday’s murderous rampage that took the lives of 20 elementary students and six staff members at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown.

Many, if not all, Suffolk County school district officials are reviewing and assessing current security measures and policies in light of the tragic event.

“We continually keep the lines of communication open with the schools. What happened [Friday] was a very very rare occurrence, fortunately, and we advise community residents not to lose perspective,” Fallon said, adding the SCPD is well aware of the various security measures in place at school districts.

“Schools are still the safest place children can be,” he said.

Your right it's absurd. Bibles and holy writ actually inspires more violence than any movie ever did. Like I said, it's complex reasons why sick individuals go on these murderous rampages.

Well Thomas, we agree to disagree. Now go back and worship Satan, and have a Happy Winter Solstice.

My point is that TV, movies and video games may enhance an already unstable individual. I have heard (can't be verified) that there have been 33 school shootings since Columbine. The trend for violent and graphic intellectual property has also trended up in correlation with school shootings. Another thing that puzzles me is why the perpetrator is glorified, and I mean glorified on TV. When someone runs out on the field during an sporting event, they make a point not to put him on TV, as not to inspire others to do the same thing. But I have to see this orange haired freak who shot up a movie theater in Colorado? F - Adam Lanza in his hellish confines. I wish I never knew who he was. Who knows how many misfits he has now inspired.

I think, at this point, we have to just speculate...this kid caused this entire mess because he was crazy. We don't know why, or ever will know why he "snapped," however it brought mental health issues, school security, and gun discussion to people's lips. Let's just hope now, after all of this senseless violence, eyes were openedto and things will start to change. God (or whoever you believe in) Bless these babies and the adults that gave their lives.
