87-Year-Old Woman Killed After Car Crashes Into Tree in Rocky Point

Accident occurred near Rocky Point High School Wednesday afternoon.

An 87-year-old woman was killed after her car crashed into a tree in Rocky Point Wednesday afternoon, police said. 

According to police, Francine Schenkel, of Ridge, was driving a 1997 Toyota northbound on Rocky Point-Yaphank Road, near Rocky Point High School, when she crossed into the southbound lane. The Toyoya then left the roadway into a wooded area and struck a tree at about 2:45 p.m., police said.

Schenkel, who was the only person inside the car, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The vehicle was impounded for a safety check as the investigation into the crash continues, police said. 

Rocky Point-Yaphank Road was closed from Route 25A to Whiskey Road for hours after the crash, but has since been reopened.
