Sound Beach Mom in Critical Condition Following Tuesday Crash

Driver in head-on crash in Shoreham is suspected of driving under the influence of heroin.

A Sound Beach woman who was driving with her newborn baby on Tuesday morning, when they were  is listed in critical condition at Stony Brook University Hospital.

Police have charged Rocky Point resident Denis Karachopan with driving while ability impaired by drugs and criminal possession of a controlled substance in the seventh degree, both misdemeanors.

He was also charged with several vehicle and traffic violations after authorities say he crossed lanes and struck the 23-year-old woman's car head-on, on Route 25A in Shoreham.

Karachopan pleaded not guilty to all charges on Wednesday, and remains in custody until he is due back in court next Wednesday.

The Sound Beach woman was hospitalized following the crash and originally placed in serious condition, though police said that her three-week-old daughter – who was also in the car – was unharmed.
