Three-Car Crash Sends One to Hospital

One person was sent to the hospital Friday afternoon after a three-car crash at the intersection of Pipe Stave Hollow Road and Route 25A around 1:30 p.m. snapped a telephone pole.

John Dunworth said he was sitting in his Ford Escape at the light on Pipe Stave Hollow Road, about to turn east onto Route 25A, when the driver of a minivan heading westbound struck a Jeep, his car, then careened into a pole.

"For a second I thought, 'This is going to be bad,'"he said. "It came skidding at an angle at me. Thank God for airbags."

Police said the person hospitalized was transported with minor injuries, and the exact cause of the accident remains under investigation.

Port Jefferson Volunteer Ambulance and Mt. Sinai Fire Department responded to the scene, and as of 2:20 p.m. a Long Island Power Authority truck had arrived to fix the snapped pole.
