44 Acre Land Purchase Preserves Open Space

Joint purchase agreement between county and town preserves property located in the Little Portions Friary.

More than 44 acres of open space in Mt. Sinai will be preserved thanks to a joint purchase agreement between Brookhaven town and Suffolk County.

The property, located in the Little Portions Friary and currently owned by the Society of St. Francis, is part of land located adjacent to Mt. Sinai Harbor and within the watershed of the harbor, according to a town spokesperson.

The town will provide twenty-five percent of the $4,430,000 purchase price with the county picking up the remaining seventy-five percent. The agreement was approved by resolution in the county legislature on Sept. 12. Legis Sarah Anker, a member of the legislature’s Environmental Planning and Agriculture Committee and also the Suffolk County Soil and Water Conservation District Board, sponsored the resolution.

According to the town, the funding comes from a capital bond, part of the nine million set aside for open space purchases.

“In addition to this parcel being a scenic, woodland sanctuary along Shore Road in Mount Sinai, this site has critically important natural resource values,” said Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine.
