Canal Road Reconstruction to Start this Summer

Project will create left-turn lanes, bike lanes and drainage modification.

With construction set to begin on Canal Road this summer, Brookhaven officials are revealing Phase II of the project designed to improve traffic flow in the Mount Sinai-Port Jefferson Area.

Phase I of the Canal Road project will start with the addition of left-turn lanes at specific intersections, a bike lane in each direction and drainage modifications, reports The Port Times Record.

It will cost roughly $310,000 with the Federal Highway Safety Improvement Program expected to reimburse the town for 80 percent.

Brookhaven Highway Supervisor Dan Losquadro presented Phase II which will include the addition of a American Disabilities Act compliant sidewalk and two traffic signals, one at Central Avenue and another at Pine Street. The cost of Phase II is expected to be $1.16 million.
