Unofficial Results: With 100 Percent Reporting, Anker Holds Slight Majority

Preliminary results have Anker on top.

Preliminary results from the Suffolk County Board of Elections have Sarah Anker, D-Mt. Sinai, defeating Martin Haley, R-Miller Place,  3468-3244 with 100 percent of districts reporting.

If these results hold, Anker will be named to the Sixth District Seat of the Suffolk County Legislature. Results likely do not include absentee ballots.

Anker has garnered just under 52 percent of the vote in a tight race. According to preliminary results, almost 90 percent of her votes are from Democratic voters, while 10 percent came from the Working Families Party.

68 percent of Haley's votes came from Republicans, 24 percent from Conservatives and 7.5 percent from Independents.

If results hold, Anker will take over the traditionally Republican seat vacated by Assemblyman Dan Losquadro, R-Shoreham. The former Mt. Sinai school board member received endorsements from Suffolk County Law Enforcement, the Long Island Federation of Labor and the Faculty Association of Suffolk County Community College, among others.

Anker has said she will fight to make sure Suffolk County residents pay fair taxes and get a fair share of school aid. She also promotes open space preservation and green job growth.

Haley has not conceded as absentee ballots have yet to be counted.

The Sixth Legislative District covers the Hamlets of of Miller Place, Sound Beach, Rocky Point, Mount Sinai and parts of Shoreham, Ridge, Middle Island, Coram, and Port Jefferson Station.
