Rocky Point's Maertz Declares Candidacy for New York State Assembly

Jennifer Maertz, D-Rocky Point, announced her candidacy Monday for the Second Assembly District.

Jennifer Maertz, D-Rocky Point, announced her candidacy Monday for the Second Assembly District for the seat that was vacated by former Assemblyman Dan Losquadro after he was elected as Brookhaven Town Superintendent of Highways during a special election in March.

The Rocky Point woman most recently ran in the state senate primary to challenge New York State Sen. Kenneth LaValle but lost to Bridget Fleming. She first ran for State Senate in the 1st Senate District in 2010.

“After first running for public office in 2010, I made a promise to continue to advocate for Long Island families and local business," Maertz said in a release. "Today I am continuing in that effort by working to provide eastern Suffolk County with the representation it deserves in the New York State Assembly.”

Maertz has served on the boards of both the Rocky Point Civic and the North Shore Youth Council and has been recognized by the Town of Brookhaven for her volunteer efforts with local youth. She is also currently Vice President of the East End Women’s Network.

“My number one goal is to make sure our elected officials are responsive to their constituents, rather than to specials interests or their own self interests," she said. "We must remember that a public servant is just that, a servant.”

The election for New York State Assembly will be held on Nov. 5.
