Sound Beach Home on Verge of Falling into LI Sound Condemned (PHOTOS)

Town of Brookhaven condemns Sound Beach woman's home on verge of falling due to erosion.

The home at 16 Shore Drive in Sound Beach has been in danger of falling into the Long Island Sound for years with continued erosion, and now the Town of Brookhaven has stepped in and condemned the home.

The owner of the home, Edith Hotis, is a senior citizen who is worried she's going to be evicted. Sound Beach Civic President Bea Ruberto told Patch that Hotis had initially contacted FEMA to see if she could get some help and at that time was told that the damage wasn't bad enough. Now, with signs posted, Hotis is in danger of facing a court order to leave from the Town if she refuses to leave, according to a report on News12.com.

Willie Jones, President of the Sound Beach Property Owners Association, said they had tried working on fixing the bluff in the past before the Department of Environmental Conservation stepped in and wrote them a ticket because they were touching vegetation and dirt on DEC property.

"We're attached to a wetlands in a tidal area so they really do have the jurisdiction," he said back in November.

Jones had been trying to work with the Town to get a bulkhead done for support in the area, but Lori Baldassare, Deputy Superintendent of Highways, , a process that would take six months or more. Jones said the issues date back years and years.

Hotis told News 12 that she and her husband, who is now deceased, put their life savings into the home and she is not willing to move.

What action should be taken by either Ms. Hotis or the Town of Brookhaven in this situation? Tell us in the comments below.

Get her out of that house, immediately; by force, if necessary, for her own safety; then: demolish the premises, at the property owner's expense (it becomes a lien on the deed) before it falls on someone, or something, or ends up being an expensive clean-up, at the bottom of the cliff, for the town...OR in The Sound as flotsam & jetsam, and becomes a hazard to navigation.....Oh.... reality is not nice, so we must not speak the truth... SOmeone might be willing to buy the property for pennies on the dollar, where it might be feasible to move the house onto a new foundation, farther inland, on the property.

Does John live across the street giving him waterfront property if the house is taken away..

Have the town move her house on safe property in exchange for the valuable piece of property they are getting. Lets face it, there is more than "condemed value" in the land.

Having the town move her house in exchange for the "valuable" piece of property is a losing game for the Town unless they bulkhead it at the bottom. The cliff will just keep eroding and the Town's property will not match the deed description at all. What will the Town do with this property?

Reality CAN be harsh, BUT it can also work miracles...IF the right people make the right calls this widow's HOME CAN be saved... "Lori Baldassare, Deputy Superintendent of Highways, said back in November they could not move forward until they formulated a plan and got DEC permits, a process that would take six months or more." Hmmmm....November to end of June is 8 months...WHY wasn't this emergency situation rushed thru back then?... Let's challenge the powers that be to cut thru the red tape and take immediate action!

Easy answer, the owner probably doesnt have political ties
Beach Walker June 29, 2012 at 03:31 AM
The town has nothing to do with the problem at this house.

So very sad...but so VERY true!
Mels Ditties June 29, 2012 at 12:18 PM
There SHOULDN'T be any question of political ties...and there SHOULD be assistance for this widow based on morals and ethics, but the more I live, the more I learn it's just not that way...Who you know, to whom you are connected dictates who will come to your aid...
Mels Ditties June 29, 2012 at 12:19 PM
Perhaps not directly, but the town certainly has the power to work thru the quagmire to get this woman the help she needs...
Justin Time June 29, 2012 at 12:33 PM
Lets face it, the town wont do anything until the house slides down. Then it becomes a big media hype on all the channels: remember you heard it first type of story. After that, the cost of cleanup begins, the enviroment control looks around, the town takes the land, and the owner loses all. Thats what all those who dont care know. Most of the public could care less. We are becoming a self-centered community of me-me-me population.

all concerned should be ashamed of themselves, is this how you treat your elderly, this isn't her fault, everything should be done to protect her home.

UPDATE: As reported on PIX11 News this am..... FEMA has agreed to reinspect the property/house, supposedly today.... (their argument has been that there wasn't enough damage to warrant emergency funds) Keep you fingers crossed for this woman....The situation slipped thru the cracks, but looks like there might be a chance to correct that before the house slips into the sound....

UPDATE: As reported on PIX11 News THIS am.... FEMA inspectors DID survey the damages at the Rocky Point House yesterday.... The information / pictures gathered will be processed & a response should be forthcoming in the next couple of weeks...IF FEMA does accept a claim, the max amount they would give would be $30,000 The cost of repairing the bulkhead & erroded hillside has been quoted at approx $200,000, so FEMA's assistance would be a small part, but hopefully enough for the homeowner to at least get the project started and safe her home....

This is my mother in law A genuinely wonderful person who deserves help
Mels Ditties July 25, 2012 at 03:11 PM
PIX11's report/contact did get FEMA back out to the property...Reported (by PIX11) yesterday, FEMA did come thru and paid out approx $22,000 for repairs...As per the owner, the estimates on total repair would be around $200,000, but she said that the FEMA funds will allow her to get work started, get the condemnation lifted & hopefully allow her to get a loan to complete all of the work so she can stay in the home... VERY nice to see that action was taken & sincere hopes that all works out well...
