Suffolk Legislature Plans Special Election for Losquadro's Former Seat

Party committees said they're in the process of picking candidates for the election.

The Suffolk County Legislature is hoping to fill the newly vacant Sixth District seat, which includes the Miller Place-Rocky Point area, in late March with a special election.

Kara Hahn, spokeswoman for the Suffolk Legislature’s Democratic majority, said Presiding Officer William Lindsay has filed a bill that would set the date for the special election for March 29. That bill was put on the table before the legislature Jan. 3, according to documents, though no vote has yet occurred on the matter.

New York State Assemblyman Dan Losquadro, R-Shoreham, was sworn in to his new office in Calverton Jan. 7, leaving the position he had held since November 2003 empty.

The Suffolk County Republican Committee is already preparing for the upcoming election. Chairman John Jay Lavalle said the committee will hold a screening for its Sixth District candidate Thursday, and will nominate its candidate at a convention in Sound Beach on Jan. 19. He added the vote to set the date for the special election should happen soon.

Lavalle said the local seat, which covers Miller Place, Sound Beach, Rocky Point, Mount Sinai and part of Middle Island, is historically Republican.
