Take Home Fido for Free This Summer

Town of Brookhaven waives all animal shelter adopt fees through Sept. 20.

Brookhaven residents have who space in their heart - and their homes - can adopt a pet for free this summer.

Brookhaven Town officials will waive all adoption fees at the Brookhaven Animal Shelter from June 21 to Sept. 20.

Brookhaven Town Board voted to waive all adoption fees at their June 18 meeting in hopes of promoting adoption of shelter animals. The shelter current is home to roughly 180 dogs and 70 cats.

"Waiving the fees is a great way to promote pet adoptions and prevent overcrowding at the shelter. All cats and dogs are waiting for a home and with so many to choose from, I'm sure anyone who visits will find the perfect companion and friend forever," said Councilwoman Jane Bonner, who is the town board's liaison to the animal shelter.

Adoption fees at the animal shelter normally cost $5 - $10 for a dog and $15 - $20 for a cat depending on whether the animal has been spayed or neutered.

In addition to the adoption fees, town officials have offered to waive the fee associated with spaying or neutering an adopted pet. The town will continue to offer free licenses for dogs adopted from the shelter.

The Brookhaven Animal Shelter is open: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 9:30 a.m. - 4 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m., and Sunday, from noon - 4 p.m.  It is located at 300 Horseblock Road in Brookhaven.
