Icy Conditions, Freezing Temperatures Cause Havoc For Districts

Schools announce two-hour delays due to inclement weather

The most recent weather forecast from The Weather Channel is predicting extremely low temperatures that will cause residual moisture on roadways to freeze, ultimately creating black ice.

In addition, "Isolated snow showers are expected overnight along and in the wake of an Arctic Frontal Passage. A dusting of snow is possible with any snow showers, which would cause briefly reduced visibilities and locally ice conditions."

Due to the forecast the Miller Place Union Free School District and the Rocky Point School District have announced delays for Tuesday.

Miller Place Union Free School District:

No AM kindergarten. No before school activities, including childcare.

All transportation for private and parochial schools and out of District students will be approximately two hours later than the normal pick-up times.

Rocky Point School District:

Two-Hour Delay

This also includes private, parochial, and full-day BOCES students. Inclement weather bus stops will be used and in effect for both morning and afternoon bus runs. Inclement weather stops are available on the Parent Portal.

If the schools are delayed from opening two hours then why bother opening them at all? It seems that they just get there, turn around, and go home! What a waste of money not meantioning the lack of education. Do all businesses delay opening two hours? Get real. The real reason for the two hour maximum delay is not getting penalized for a day off in the 180 day calander.

Yes, nothing like our Schools teaching our kids by example! Guess it's ok to go to work 2 hours late because it is cold outside. This situation is painful to digest. Give me a break! The roads were not icy. No reason to start schools 2 hours late at the same temps they were to begin with. Even the kids are scratching their heads at this decision. I hope they explain it at the next board meeting! Look back to the winter conditions of 77-78 when schools remained open. What a joke we have become as a society!

I too do not understand the 2 hour delay...but I did not send our son to school because he gets atmospheric asthmatic attacks and this air would have shocked his lungs and I cannot be there to be sure he keeps his mouth covered.
