Miller Place Board Member Resigns; Three Spots Now Up for Election

Longtime board member Ann O'Brien resigned Wednesday.

Longtime Miller Place Board of Education member Ann O'Brien announced that she is resigning in her fifth term after serving for over 14 years on the board.

O'Brien's announcement creates another opening on the board, and there will now be three spots up for vote in this year's election.

"Ann has been a tireless volunteer for parts of two decades," said fellow board member Michael Unger. "She is an expert in many areas and her knowledge in these areas will be sorely missed. Board members do not always agree, but I can honestly say she always had the best interest of the children, teachers and residents at heart. That is not an easy thing to do and she did it well.

Members John Magnani and Doug Ports are in the last year of their terms and have not announced if they will run for re-election. Their spots are three-year terms while O'Brien's is a one-year term.

With the three spots open, the two highest vote-getters in this year's election would earn the three-year terms while the third would take O'Brien's final term. That person would then have to run for re-election the following year, if they choose to do so.

A similar situation occurred in 2011 when then-president Jim Moran announced his resignation before the budget vote. In that year's vote, current president Doug Ports earned the rest of Moran's term, which ends on June 30.

Packets to apply for election to the board are now available in the central office. The vote is held at the same time as the budget vote on May 21.
