Robotic team takes part in friendly competition at Smith Haven Mall.

The da Vinci Surgical System, a sophisticated robotic platform designed to expand the surgeon’s capabilities and offer a minimally invasive option for major surgery, was made available to the public at Smith Haven Mall this weekend.

Six members of the Miller Place Robotics team took part in a friendly competition with teams from Smithtown, Comsewogue and Sachem. Each group tried their hand at a simulated game in which they had to use the robotic arms to pick up rings and place them on a peg.

Mather surgeons demonstrated the system and explained it's advantage. It is more precise than traditional surgery because resulting in smaller incisions, fewer infections and faster recovery.
