Miller Place Schools Host Wellness Fair

Residents Attend Annual Wellness Fair at MPHS

In an effort to hold a community wide event in one place to see what health resources are available, the held its second annual Wellness Fair at the saturday.

The purpose, according to Athletic Director Lisa Lally is to allow, “parents and kids to come and hear about ways they can get fit together as a family.” 

“The event's great," said Coram resident Matt Gentile. "It’s very informative, the kids are having a lot of fun and health is important so you can live a long, happy life and enjoy every day.”

34 vendors from area businesses and healthy food suppliers including Saf-T-Swim, Pampered Chef, Whole Foods, Kellogg, and attended the wellness fair.

“I think it’s a lot of fun for the family to see what's going on in the community that has to do with exercise and eating well,” said Miller Place resident Noelle Dunlop.

Anthony Diglio, a representative from New Hyde Park-based York Shire Foods, attended the fair to display new healthy snack food products.  One featured product was Wise lightly salted potato chips. 

“The low sugar, low salt, no or low fat meets all the school’s guidelines for what they need," he said of the chips featured at the fair.

l home economics teachers Pam Markott and Donna Sommo distributed samples of coffee cakes that feature egg whites and whole wheat flour. 

“We want to set them on a healthy path,” Sommo said.

Lally said approximately 300 residents attended the fair over the course of the five hour day. 

“Its been a very positive community event,” she said.
