Rocky Point Adopts Budget Under Tax Cap; Board Seat Needs Nomination

At Monday's meeting at Rocky Point High School, the Board of Education adopted a $74.3 million budget; an increase of 3.75 percent over the current budget.

The budget is basically the same as Superintendent Michael Ring’s proposed budget from March, though the tax levy increase is down from the proposed 3.56 percent (which is the cap for the district) to 3.54 percent.

“I think the budget, what makes us most proud about it, is we’re able to stay within the tax cap, continue all programs, enhance academic rigor and enhance academic rigor for at-risk kids," Ring said. "It truly is a budget that keeps everything together without excessing staff and keeps the taxes within the cap.”

The ballot will also include a vote to approve the Capital Reserve Fund for 2013 along with the board election. Trustee Kathleen Heggers’ seat is up and she has not said that she will seek re-election.

Due to the withdrawal of a candidate for the seat, however, the deadline for filing petitions for nominations has been extended to May 7. All petitions must be filed at the District Clerk’s office in the Administrative Office, 90 Rocky Point-Yaphank Road in Rocky Point no later than 5 p.m.
