Rocky Point Fifth Grader Wins Ducks Essay Contest

Joseph A. Edgar Intermediate School fifth grader Elana Gold was recently named one of four winners in the “Take a Duck to Class” essay contest sponsored by TD Bank and the Long Island Ducks.

More than 1,000 essays were written and submitted to this year’s contest. Each essay was 250 words or less and focused on “Why My Community Is Important to Me.”

In her essay, Elana focused on her community’s ability to come together to help others, the many support organizations and its schools.

“As a community, we make a good team,” she wrote. “We come together as a community, but also as a family. I absolutely love living here and wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.”

As one of the lucky winners, Elana earned a $50 Visa gift card from TD Bank and a visit from L.I. Ducks manager Kevin Baez and team mascot QuakerJack.

During a special assembly program, Elana read her essay in front of her fifth-grade peers before Mr. Baez spoke about his career and the importance of working hard in school. After the program, Elana’s class had the chance to play whiffle ball with the special guests and received a drawstring backpack and school supplies from the contest organizers.
