Rocky Point Goes The Extra Mile To Honor Veterans

Students make sure veterans are not forgotten with district-wide tribute.

Rocky Point School District students and staff members paid tribute to the nation’s service members by honoring them during several in-school Veterans Day ceremonies. District-wide the students participated in open discussions on what veterans do and why their role is so important. In addition to show their thanks, students performed patriotic songs, shared personal essays, and explained the meaning of the POW/MIA remembrance table which is on display in the district.

Speaking to the history of the holiday, Principal Linda Towlen noted that the first Veterans Day was celebrated following World War I and was called Armistice Day. “After World War II, Armistice Day was still celebrated on Nov. 11 but in 1953, people began calling it Veterans Day,” she said. “Although Armistice Day was in honor of World War I, Veterans Day is in honor of every war that the United States has fought. It is important on this day to give thanks for times of peace, and to remember who is protecting your rights every day.”

In recognition of the students’ work to prepare for this event, many elected officials attended this year’s ceremony to join the school in honoring the community’s veterans. Several awards were also issued to the fifth-graders in honor of their coordinated effort, including a citation from Sen. Phil Boyle, a certificate of recognition from the Islip Town Board, a proclamation from Gov. Andrew Cuomo and a proclamation declaring the day JAE Intermediate School’s Veterans Appreciation Day in Suffolk County.
