Senator LaValle Asks Commissioner To Delay Common Core Standards

Commissioner King is asked to put a halt on the Common Core standards that are "hurting" students according to Senator LaValle.

Senator Ken LaValle took a hard stance against the new rigorous standards known as the Common Core. LaValle spoke to the New York State Education Committee on Thursday pleading with them to re-evaluate the Common Core and delay it.

The Common Core State Standards Initiative is an education initiative that details what K-12 students should know in English language arts and mathematics at the end of each grade. The initiative was designed to establish consistent education standards across the states as well as ensure that students graduating from high school are prepared to enter two or four-year college programs or enter the workforce.

However, the standards have been highly criticized by parents, teachers, and students as "completely unnecessary" and too "pressure filled." Apparently, LaValle agrees.

According to LaValle's website, he spoke to the committee and asked New York State Commissioner John King to delay “Common Core” implementation. “Going back to the initial meeting on Long Island last April, it appears that the Department of Education is not listening.  The rollout of Common Core has been flawed, and children are being hurt," said LaValle.

"There is an immediate need for something to happen since the process has collapsed.  I would like the commissioner to hit the delay button today.”

The committee was unavailable for comment in time for publication.

Keeping our eyes on the perverbial "ball", kudos to Senator Lavalle for listening to the educational community (which includes concerned parents) that Common Core has failed the children. This is hopefully the first step in not only putting an end to Common Core standards but also abolishing the state education department!

Lavalle can "ask" for anything...but does he REALLY care, what the answer is ? Like his hearing locally, you have to submit your questions in ADVANCE !

Confucius, I don't know where your going with this at least we know Senator Lavalle is paying attention to important issues rather than disparaging constituents and asking them to leave the state ala Mr. Cuomo!!

It's going here, Reddawn1... The NYS Assemble Republicans are the MOST Politically Impotent bunch of Wimps, EVER to be voted in and present, here in the New York Socialist State of New York ! They are THE perfect PAWNS for surrendering to Comrade Cuomo ! It's time like OLD FARTS, like Lavalle hang up their baseball hats, and GO HOME ! PS...As for Common Core, Coward Lavalle, for the local hearing he asked for questions FIRST...a Coward's Trick, if there ever was one !
