Week in Review: All Local School Budgets Pass

The top headlines from the week that was.

The American Samurai Jiu-Jitsu Center in Mt. Sinai sustained extensive damage in a fire Thursday night that affected seven businesses.

A call came in at around 10:30 p.m. Thursday about a fire at the store at 331 Route 25A in the Northgate Plaza. According to police, the fire originated in the Karate place and there were no injuries. Damage to the store was extensive while the other businesses had smoke and water damage.

Budget Passes By 64 Percent In Miller Place

Residents came out to the polls Tuesday and passed a $67.3 million Miller Place budget for the 2013-’14 season. The budget passed by a vote of 871 to 486, 64 percent.

The budget included a 3.94 percent tax levy increase within the cap, which meant it needed to pass by just the majority (50 percent plus one).

Shoreham-Wading River's $66.1 Million Budget Passes

A $66.1 million budget was approved Tuesday by Shoreham-Wading River voters by 67 percent.

With 1,005 ‘yes’ votes and 504 ‘no’ votes, a tax levy increase -- within the cap -- of 2.29 percent kicks in this coming school year.

The budget is an increase of 5.5 percent over the current year's budget and does not include any cuts.

Voters Approve Rocky Point Budget

Rocky Point voters passed a $74.3 million budget on Tuesday by a vote of 1,058-458. The budget included a 3.54 percent tax levy increase within the cap, so it needed just the majority of 50 percent plus one in order to pass.
The budget is a 3.75 percent increase over last year’s and did not include any layoffs or cuts.

The Mt. Sinai community came out and "overwhelmingly" passed the school budget and a proposition to transfer existing funds of $327,000 from the capital reserve to pay for a renovation of the Middle School roof, according to Superintendent Enrico Crocetti.

The  $55.2 million budget did not exceed the district’s tax levy cap and is a spending increase of .96 percent over the current budget.
