Whiz Kid: Maureen Balazy Gives Back

Balazy looks to bring her school and community involvement to the Miller Place High School.

Name: Maureen Balazy - Age 14

School: - Ninth Grade

Accomplishment: As a student at , Maureen was on the high honor roll for every quarter of her three years there. She takes honors classes and received the Presidential Award for Academic Excellence and was inducted into the National Junior Honor Society.

She was on the cheerleading team in sixth and seventh grades and was a member of Vocal Jazz and Adelines. She plays the violin in the school orchestra.

She was also a member of the drama club with performances in Bugsy Malone Junior and Aladdin and she participated in the Mount Sinai Summer Theater Arts Program, performing in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.  She also attended the A.C.T. acting school.

Keys to Awesomeness: Maureen Balazy always looks to give back to her community and has volunteered to serve meals at a local soup kitchen and this Septemeber she has volunteered to work a golf outing to support the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. 

She has been an active member of Girl Scouts since the first grade and is currently at the Senior level. With her Girl Scout troop for the past three years, she collected items to fill 20 Easter baskets that were then donated to the outreach program.  Maureen helped raise money for a local family that lost their home to a fire, by making and selling hair bows, as well as collecting clothes and household items for that family.

She even earned the Girl Scout Bronze Award by running an educational program that taught younger children about fire safety and the Silver Award by running a food drive to replenish local food pantries in the summer months.
