Whiz Kid: Miller Place Salutatorian Nicholas Castelli

AP scholar aspires to be a naval aviator.

Accomplishments: Nick will be Miller Place High School's salutatorian upon graduation in June.  He challenged himself with eight Advanced Placement (AP) courses during his high school career and was recognized by the College Board as an AP Scholar with Honor.  He was on the high honor roll for every quarter and the recipient of the Award for General Academic Excellence each year, as well as the Award for Excellence in AP physics.

Nick is the president of the National Honor Society as well as a member of the Foreign Language Honor Society.  He played the trombone in the concert band.  As a two year member of the varsity winter track team, he competed in the 200 meter event and as a four year member of the Varsity spring track team, he competed in the 400 meter event, earning the Scholar Athlete Award.  He was a linebacker and guard on the varsity football team and the recipient of the 12th Man Award.

A Boy Scout from first grade through his senior year of high school, Nick earned his Eagle Scout Award, the highest honor that a Boy Scout can achieve.  His project involved constructing two oak display cases honoring the military at The First Baptist Church of Patchogue.  He has volunteered his time for this church through the years, doing yard work, painting, assisting with church activities and as a helper at their vacation bible school.

Nick was accepted to the United States Merchant Marine Academy and offered a Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps scholarship to Cornell University.  He will be attending one of those in the fall and intends to major in engineering.  He aspires to be a naval aviator.
