Whiz Kid: Miller Place Senior Austin Hassel

Name: Austin Hassel, age 18

School:
 Senior at Miller Place High School

Accomplishments: A high honor roll student for nearly every quarter of his high school career, Austin has challenged himself with Advanced Placement (A.P.) classes.  He is a member of the National Honor Society and the Foreign Language Honor Society.  He was the recipient for the Award for Excellence in Symphonic Band for two consecutive years.

Austin plays the euphonium and the trombone in the Symphonic and Jazz bands. He has participated in the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) competition for the past seven years.  The high marks he earned during these competitions in 2013 garnered him a spot with the All-State Concert Band and with the New York State Council of Adminiatrators for Music Education (NYSCAME) festival. He was selected to play in the Suffolk County Music Educators Association (SCMEA) festival each year from 9th to 12th grade.

On the field, Austin played varsity soccer as a defender, and was the recipient of the Coach's Award.  He has also been on the varsity track team for four years, running the 200 meter event.

Austin is a waiter at the Miller Place Surf Club.  He will be attending Binghamton University in the fall, majoring in Biomedical Engineering.
