Senior Nick Hirdt, currently ranked ninth in his class, has been recruited to run cross country at Lehigh.

Name: Nick Hirdt - Age 17

School: Miller Place High School - Senior

Accomplishments: Hirdt currently ranks ninth in his senior class and will have taken eight Advanced Placement (A.P.) courses and two college level courses during his high school career. His high scores on the A.P. exams have earned him the College Board's A.P. Scholar with Honors Award. He has been on the high honor roll for every quarter of high school and has received the General Academic Excellence Award each year.

The senior serves as treasurer for the National Honor Society and is a member of the Foreign Language Honor Society for Spanish. His community service has included blood drives, food drives and volunteering at the district's summer track camp.

Nick played on the Junior Varsity soccer team as a freshman but caught the running bug the following spring and has since excelled in Varsity Spring Track, Varsity Winter Track and Varsity Cross Country. His main event is the mile, running it in 4:26 as a junior, just one second shy of Miller Place High School's record. This past fall he ran the high school's fastest 5K on the Sunken Meadow Cross Country in over 20 years.

He has received awards for All-County, All-Division and All-League for cross country each year, as well as the award for All County Academic as a senior. Hirdt made States for cross country his junior and senior year, placed fourth in the county as an 11th grader and third in the county this year.

Outside of school, Nick has worked as a tutor and soccer referee. He has been recruited to run cross country for Lehigh University's D1 team, where he plans to study bioengineering and integrated business/engineering. He hopes to pursue a career in biomechanics and bioengineering.

Bravo MP Majority, very well said.Teachers are the most protected job on the planet. Now if theyRead More could only earn that money by producing results in the classrooms like they used to. But I also blame the absent NO vote. They need to be sent a message-we need a majority no vote but that will never happen. Glad I am out of here in 2 years. Can't imagine trying to live here and pay these taxes on social security and my 401K that tanked in 2008 while I was making up the teachers loss on their pension and paying my health insurance & theirs at the same time. So boo hoo teachers you have to spend money on the kids while I spend money on you.

Spoken like a true teacher. Did you know that the average school teacher is only paying 15% of theRead More actual cost of health care premiums for themselves and their families, when Medical healthcare insurance premiums are rising at an alarming 17% per annum? Do you realize that teachers are paid an additional stipend if they work more than 3 consecutive periods in a day? Are you aware that teacher pensions were protected during the stock market crash of 2008, when the average person's 401K was totally at risk? Perhaps if teachers realized how good they have it - look at the BIG picture and outside of their bubble - then they would complain less. Oh and yes, we need our loftily-paid Administrators to kick in some of the salaries, to help pay for stuff. Hard to believe the school districts' mantras that "it's all for the kids".
