Whiz Kid: Rebecca Whimple, Private First Class

Whimple, a 2010 graduate from Miller Place, is earning honors while serving her Country in the United States Army.

Accomplishments: Whimple wanted to join the military since the eighth grade and made it happen when she joined the United States Army in her senior year of high school through the Delayed Entry Program, reporting once a week after school for physical training to prepare for Basic Training.

She went active in July of 2010, reporting to US Army Basic Training in Fort Jackson, S.C. In September of 2010 she attended Advanced Individual Training in Fort Lee, Va. In November of 2010, she was assigned to the 14th Combat Support Hospital Unit at Fort Benning in Georgia, specializing in supply.

Keys to Awesomeness: Whimple's current rank is Private First Class E-3.  She was awarded the Rifle Marksman Medal and a Medal Pin for photography. She is the official photographer of her unit and was awarded Soldier of the Month in July.

In addition to her US Army duties, she volunteered for training in the US Army Elite Ceremonial Unit and now plays the bugle at US Army military funerals on select weekends in full dress uniform.

During her high school career, she was a member of the Select Chorus and in the ensemble for drama productions. She was the recipient of the OAK (Outstanding Act of Kindness) Award in the ninth grade and the recipient of the Public Speaking Award in the 12th grade. She also volunteered for the
