Whiz Kid: Scholar-Athlete Matthew Hin Headed to Hartwick to Study Law

Recent Miller Place graduate received a scholarship to Hartwick College and will pursue a career in law.

Accomplishments: Matthew will be headed to Hartwick College in the fall to study political science with the career goal of becoming a lawyer. He was awarded Hartwick's Presidential Scholarship and will be playing on their lacrosse team as a goalie.

While a student at Miller Place High School, Matthew took Advanced Placement (AP) classes and was the recipient of the Student Government Award, as well as the Senior Award for Excellence in Film Study. He has played the violin in the orchestra program since the fourth grade and has competed in the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) competitions on the violin and piano.

Hin was a three sport athlete, competing on the Varsity lacrosse team as a goalie and on the Varsity indoor track team in the 55 meter and 300 meter events. On the Junior Varsity wrestling team, he was the recipient of the team's Work Horse Award in 2009. He played travel lacrosse with Team 91 for three seasons.

The recent grad was elected as secretary on the high school's Executive Council, serving on several school committees and helping to coordinate student participation in this year's homecoming. He was Master of Ceremonies at the pep rally, as well as at the Holiday Movie Night and the Variety Show. He most recently had the honor of presenting the invocation at the Miller Place Booster Club Senior Athletic Dinner.

Matthew is an avid community volunteer. He has cooked and served dinners to the young men at Hope House Ministries, coordinated a towel and toiletry drive to serve the needs of the men at the Pax Christie shelter, as well as gathered and delivered leftover hot food from school and local award ceremonies for Pax Christie residents.  

He was a member of Athletes Helping Athletes and the Varsity Club, which required him to complete at least 25 hours of community service. Matthew has also volunteered his time at the PTO Harvest Festival, the Joe Keany Memorial Run, the North Shore Art Guild and at the Miller Place Friends of the Art's Drive for Your School event.
