With $2.4 Million Budget Shortfall, Mt. Sinai May Pierce Tax Cap

Superintendent proposed budget that exceeds tax levy cap.

With a budget shortfall of about $2.4 million, Mt. Sinai Superintendent Anthony Bonasera proposed piercing the tax levy cap at a March 14 meeting, according to a report in the Village Beacon Record.

Bonasera prefers piercing the cap and going to a tax levy of $37.7 million, which would bring in an additional $1.2 million, according to the report. Other options for bridging the gap include cutting programs, negotiating contracts or reducing expenditures.

The Super said the district hopes to reach out to the community to support a budget that would pierce the state tax levy cap while asking teachers to make concessions in the hope of preserving programs.
