Dr. Michael Mann to Speak on Long Island, New York at Suffolk County Community College

Nobel Award Scientist To Speak to Community

Date: Tuesday May 8th

Time: 7:00 PM ET (Book signing at 6 PM)

Location: Shea Theatre, Islip Arts Bldg. (Campus Map, park near Bldg. O)

Selden, NY – Suffolk County Community College will host Dr. Michael E. Mann, Professor and Director of Earth System Science Center at Pennsylvania State University, as he speaks on the topic of climate change science and the political controversy associated with the reality of human-caused global warming, on Tuesday, May 8 at 7:00 p.m. in Shea Theatre in the Islip Arts Building on the Ammerman Campus in Selden.

Dr. Mann is an internationally recognized climate scientist, Nobel Peace Prize winner, and accomplished author. He will be available for a book signing at 6:00 p.m. at the same location. The event is free and open to the general public.

Dr. Mann’s famous “hockey stick” global temperature reconstruction was prominently featured in the 2001 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Summary for Policymakers and since then, the hockey stick has become an icon in what he calls the “Climate Wars.” His research clearly showed that modern day temperatures are significantly higher than at any time in the past 1000 years and subsequent research by Dr. Mann and others have extended this time frame back to 2000 years.

Dr. Mann recently published The Hockey Stick and the Climate Wars: Dispatches from the Front Lines by Columbia University Press. In this publication Dr. Mann says,

“In short, I attempt to use the Hockey Stick to cut through the fog of disinformation that has been generated by the campaign to deny the reality of climate change. It is my intent, in so doing, to reveal the very real threat to our future that lies behind it.”

This event is sponsored by Suffolk County Community College’s Office of Campus Activities and Student Leadership Development on the Ammerman Campus in Selden. For more information, please contact Professor Scott A. Mandia at mandias@sunysuffolk.edu or 631-451-4104.

Can we please move on to the real discussion about what to do to solve the problems that are getting more serious every year? Time is running out. If we act now then the free markets and individuals can make palatable choices and we can keep government regulations to a minimum. The longer we wait the worse the problem will become and then government regulations might be forced onto us. I prefer to make the choice myself, don’t you?
We need to reduce our emissions of carbon for the sake of our public health, national security, and economic competitiveness. Surely it is foolish to base our economic energy needs on sources that are dwindling in supply and increasing in price when, instead, we could move toward energy efficiency and cheaper-by-the-year, infinite sources such as the sun and wind. If we stay addicted to fossil fuels and do not begin investing in those technologies now, we will be buying them from China in the future instead of selling it to them.

Not my intention at all. Much of the scientific literature is filled with technical jargon making it difficult to read. The Guide I referred to makes the science easy to understand. I, along with most people, will always prefer an easy/simple explanation whenever possible.
Paul Kersey May 1, 2012 at 09:26 pm
"I do suggest that commentators keep the science and the politics separate."
Not possible. The global cooling/global warming/climate change issue will be forever linked to politics because many of its most prominent scientists have shown themselves to be easily corrupted. Like it or not, debate of this issue will always be as much political as scientific. The revelations behind the leaked emails also show how anti-human so many so-called environmentalists are -- in those emails, several prominent ones wished for a good 'ol plague to wipe out a bunch of us pesky humans. Mann, Hansen, et al had their true feelings revealed, and they cannot expect their credibility to ever be restored.

DRILL BABY DRILL !

That's a good point about credibility Paul, but do a few rotten apples spoil the bunch? Just because one or two people don't feel bound by ethics does that invalidate the whole movement? To what degree can we say the data is corrupted, as my impression is the scientific community is worldwide? If we're talking about a handful of studies, they would surely look out of place against overwhelming trends in the larger data sets conducted by others. Has anyone repeated the experiments in question to validate or refute them?
Matthew Lott May 2, 2012 at 07:11 am
One of these "rotten apples" is Dr. Michael Mann and he "invalidated" himself, with emails. Can't wait to hear your answer on that !

What's genuinely annoying to me, Paul, is how Tax payer money is being used at a state university in New York State, to forward this Fake Science, by paying for a facility to present this Fraud, Dr. Michael Mann...And to promote his book for Mann's personal and professional profit.
But then what could we expect from a state university of NYS, that removed Christian and Jewish religious holidays from it's school calendar ? Forcing students to chose between their personal, religious faith or going to school is one of the Left's favorite "political causes", but we are supposed to believe it isn't "political" or anti Religion ? Presenting a promoter of Fake "Climate Science" on the Tax Payer's "dime", isn't "political" as well ? Sure.
Scott Mandia May 2, 2012 at 11:12 am
"One is entitled to his own opinions but not to his own facts."
As I have shown, stolen emails for a handful of scientists does not invalidate physics and data especially when there are thousands of scientific papers submitted every month that support that data. Those emails also were investigated by several independent bodies and Dr. Michael Mann was exonerated by all. In fact, he recently won the Hans Oescher Award which is one of the most prestigious awards a scientists can win. It is like an actor winning the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Academy Awards ceremony. I am confident that readers here can see the difference between reasoned arguments and emotional rhetoric that is unsupported by factual information. This comment chain illustrates why Dr. Mann and many others have been attacked because their research is inconvenient to those that have a political or financial agenda. ExxonMobil is profiting over $100 million per day this year and so one can easily see how there are forces that do not wish us to move toward cleaner, renewable energy. Fossil fuel-backed groups are fooling people like those we see posting here and elsewhere. The saddest part is that our tax dollars are subsidizing these corporate billionaires while some here are unwittingly doing their dirty work for them by attacking science.
Matthew Lott May 2, 2012 at 12:07 pm
Scott, we are not in your classroom...which you enjoy, from the beneficence of NYS Tax payers...lucky for you !
Michael Palo May 2, 2012 at 01:38 pm
Hi Scott, you ask about what we can do about solving these issues. I think it has to do with changing society itself. There is precedent in Noel Perrin's book Giving Up the Gun: Japan's Reversion to the Sword, the author describes how a society can make a concerted effort to effect change by ridding itself of guns even after they used them effectively in military engagements. I think that the topic of climate change has to be personalized for any change on this order to occur. It will be exponentially more difficult to rid ourselves of polluting & harmful behaviors until people can find an alternate way of making their livelihood. But the simplest act we can do is write our government officials & media outlets to let them know we need to change. If we are to believe in the Republic, our efforts must start there by letting the government know the will of the people. Beyond that, in the interim & beyond, I think it is a matter of personal choices. We must acknowledge that each individual "costs" far more energy in our society today than ever before. We can moderate that ourselves. It's up to each of us to do so.
Paul Kersey May 2, 2012 at 01:53 pm
Here is an interesting book on how societies work out when they "give up the gun" (actually, when citizens are disarmed by their governments):
http://www.amazon.com/The-Black-Book-Communism-Repression/dp/0674076087/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1335966258&sr=8-1 Giving (or having taken) power from the people placing it in the hands of the government -- whether it is for "peace", or to save mankind from the weather, etc -- almost always ends up the same way -- with millions dead. Governments have killed way more people than Exxon Et al. ever have. This is why the "climate change" crowd is ultimately so creepy -- they are willing to sacrifice the sovereignty and, ultimately, the lives, of "the people" to fulfill some sort of Utopian dream, and they convince many people of the righteousness of their goals. Of course, all of those who press to further these ideas always see themselves as the people wielding the power, not being part of the masses.

Hi Matthew, I can't speak for Dr. Mann or the allegations against him but I believe I can still listen & make up my own mind after I hear what he has to say. I think it best to jump in with both eyes open & approach the situation dispassionately. I try to address actions & not people. That will help to depersonalize a sensitive issue. I can't think of a single person who hasn't made mistakes or doesn't have regrets of some sort. Even if what has been said of Dr. Mann's research up until this point by his detractors were 100% accurate, it wouldn't necessarily follow that his actions heretofore must be of the same sort. I expect any such controversy surrounding validity would encourage greater effort on the part of any scientist to prove a responsible & dedicated approach to the scientific method to his peers & to the public. That sort of dedication would satisfy my requirements for starting the process of re-establishing trust & credibility. We don't have to agree with Dr. Mann or "buy into" his theories, but if we do not listen there is no chance of hearing anything he has to say that has merit. We each have something valuable to say because ours is a unique perspective & may see something others may not. That is the value of the dissenting opinion our country was designed to protect. It matters less to me where information comes from than the value it has for me. That's why I plan to listen & make up my own mind.
Scott Mandia May 2, 2012 at 02:15 pm
Paul,
Our military experts and our health experts are trying to save us from self-sacrifice. Not addressing climate change threatens our well-being, our national security, and our economic competitiveness. We are killing ourselves and others by inaction, not to mention playing God with nature. Do we have this right? It is unfortunate that you have fallen victim to a well-oiled misinformation machine that is taking your money while you unwittingly do their bidding. All of this is well-detailed here: http://bit.ly/8gctAZ Back in 1995 Exxon, along with other fossil fuel interests, asked their own scientists about global warming and these scientists stated: "The scientific basis for the Greenhouse Effect and the potential impact of human emissions of greenhouse gases such as CO2 on climate is well established and cannot be denied," the experts wrote in an internal report compiled for the coalition in 1995. Guess what Exxon did with this information? They buried it and began a massive anti-science campaign to manufacture doubt in the minds of people such as yourself. AND your tax dollars subsidized this campaign. Imagine that. You paid a rich corporation to lie to you. I am very angry and so should all of you. While we bicker China is kicking our behinds in the next tech revolution which is alternative energy. I want my children to be healthy and safe and for America to win the tech race, don't you? Don't we all?

Solyndra.
Michael Palo May 2, 2012 at 02:19 pm
Hi Paul, I'd like to clarify that the above referenced example was mentioned to cite a precedent of change a society felt was collectively necessary. The nature of that change is irrelevent. The point was it's possible to change our society today. We just have to roll up our sleeves & do it. I am in NO WAY WHATSOEVER in favor of gun control, which is not germane to the topic. Thanks.
Matthew Lott May 2, 2012 at 02:23 pm
Scott, I guess you are very disappointed that we have a Free Society here in the US, and in China, they base their society and economy on slave labor.
But you "Leftie's" want us Slaves of Big Government, where they can use Fake Science to enslave us MORE than they already do. I would rather utilize our God Given natural resources To The Max, and Light one incandescent light bulb, than curse the darkness of curly light bulb ! There are plenty God Given natural resources, and they are here for our maximum exploitation and Comfort.
Scott Mandia May 2, 2012 at 02:26 pm
Michael,
Dr. Mann is a scientist of the utmost integrity. Nothing in any emails invalidates his science. If Dr. Mann were never born, seas would still be rising, heat waves, droughts, and floods would still be devastating societies, ice would still be melting, species would still be going extinct, reefs would still be dying, health conditions would be deteriorating, etc, etc., etc. Because iof Dr. Mann and others we know why this is happening and how we can avoid even greater risks. You are allowing yourself to get distracted when you engage people who believe that Dr. Mann or thousands of international scientists must be colluding to defraud billions of people. And ExxonMobil and the Koch Industries keep smiling as people remain distracted and they make billions in profits every month while many in this world are struggling. BTW, more than half (59%) of our national trade deficit is imported fossil fuels and many of the countries we import from are considered unsafe for Americans to visit.
Michael Palo May 2, 2012 at 02:51 pm
Hi Scott, don't worry I haven't written off Dr. Mann's research yet but if I don't listen to opposing views how can I expect reciprocity? Incidentally as you mention Koch Industries, I thought you would be interested to know Koch helped to debunk Climategate & reaffirm the science behind this issue:

Scott, your "Occupy Wall Street" slip is showing !
Remember now...no politics !
Matthew Lott May 2, 2012 at 07:40 pm
If you are genuinely concerned about our Country's deficit and energy usage, you would encourage unrestricted oil and natural gas drilling, and enterprises like the recent pipeline from Canada, that is sending needed fuel to China.
What you want to support is Fake, socalled "green jobs" spending like Solyndra. This only enriches "bundlers" for The Regime, and fake "jobs". You are only concerned about the Deficit and energy initiatives that fit into your Progressive template...not things that have been proven successful. Only God only knows what you teach in that classroom of yours, but it's not anything practical and proven successful...by companies like EXXONMOBIL and KOCH.

The discovery process for his lawsuit will be very interesting -- if he has the nerve to pursue it (which I doubt).
