Eagles Scoreboard: Wrestling Wins Two, Bowling One

Varsity wrestling earned two league victories last week.

Wrestling

It was a good week for the Eagles' varsity wrestling squad as they won two league matches to move to 4-1 in League VI-DI.

On Wednesday, the Eagles scored pins in eight of 11 victories in a 60-21 drubbing of Amityville. Top wrestlers Matt Ross (145), Sam Schwartzapfel (130) and Tommy Dutton (119) all won by either pin or technical forfeit.

In Friday's match against rival Mt. Sinai, it was the same story as Ross (this time at 152), Schwartzapfel and Dutton all won by either pin or TF once again in a 41-30 victory.

"[He was] one of the top ranked wrestlers in the county last year but was upset," coach Darren Goldstein said of Ross at the beginning of the season. "He comes back this year and is ranked second at 145 and is probably our most solid wrestler."

Eighth grader Tommy Dutton, younger brother of two-time state champion Stephen Dutton, is in the top five in the county. Schwartzapfel moved to the district this year from Pennsylvania and has found success for the Eagles, who will face division foes Westhampton and Miller Place on Jan. 26 and Jan. 27.
