Eagles Sports Notebook: Cheerleaders Win Nationals, Wrestlers Place at Counties

Full recap of cheerleaders' championship performance to come.

Cheerleading:

The Rocky Point varsity cheerleading team won the National High School Cheerleading Championship title for the Universal Cheerleader's Association Medium Varsity Division this weekend in Orlando, Fla.  The team, under the direction of coach Anna Spallina, was fresh off the heels of its Long Island Championship a week ago.

A press conference is set to take place the morning of Wednesday, Feb. 16 at and Patch will have a full recap of their performance and the press conference along with photos from the competition soon to come.

Wrestling

Boys Basketball

The varsity boys basketball team dropped to 2-9 in League V play with two losses this past week.

On Tuesday, Feb. 8 the Eagles lost to Islip (8-3), 63-41.

Kodi Lubkeman led the Eagles with 11 points. He was the only Eagle to score in double digits in the game while Islip's David Powell recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 assists.

On Friday, the Eagles couldn't recover from a bad second quarter and fell to Sayville (2-9) , 59-49.

The Golden Flashes outscored Rocky Point 24-12 in the second quarter which proved to be the difference in the 10-point game. Jon Popko and Andreas Vouliakis each scored in double digits with 14 and 11 points, respectively. Joe Kingston added nine points for the Eagles while Sayville's James Rupp led all scorers with 19 points.

Girls Basketball

The Eagles fell to 0-12 on the seaosn in league play with two more losses, albeit close games, this past week.

On Tuesday a late comeback fell short in a 50-43 loss against Islip (5-6). Shannon Grodotzke led all scorers with 21 points for Rocky Point and Annie Kennedy added 12 points of her own but the team's lack of depth once again hurt them in the loss.

On Friday the Eagles lost a five-point game to Sayville, 52-47.

Kennedy led the Eagles with 19 points but Sayville's Marissa Kahane netted 23 to lead the Golden Flashes (3-10) to victory. A 19-4 third quarter put the Eagles in a deficit to large to overcome despite outscoring Sayville by 10 the rest of the game.

The Eagles have one more chance to avoid a winless league season when they travel to Eastport-South Manor (6-5) on Tuesday, Feb. 15 at 5:45 p.m.

Spoken like a true teacher. Did you know that the average school teacher is only paying 15% of theRead More actual cost of health care premiums for themselves and their families, when Medical healthcare insurance premiums are rising at an alarming 17% per annum? Do you realize that teachers are paid an additional stipend if they work more than 3 consecutive periods in a day? Are you aware that teacher pensions were protected during the stock market crash of 2008, when the average person's 401K was totally at risk? Perhaps if teachers realized how good they have it - look at the BIG picture and outside of their bubble - then they would complain less. Oh and yes, we need our loftily-paid Administrators to kick in some of the salaries, to help pay for stuff. Hard to believe the school districts' mantras that "it's all for the kids".
