Letter and Photos: A Thank-You For Dig Pink Support

Captain of the Miller Place volleyball team thanks community for support in fundraiser.

The following is an original letter sent to Patch written by Emma Larson:

A Letter to My Community,

Miller Place High School's JV and Varsity volleyball teams set a goal of raising $5,000 for this year's Dig Pink event.  They exceeded that goal by raising over $5,400.  High school and college volleyball teams hold Dig Pink events across the country to raise money for breast cancer research and awareness.  The money raised supports the Side-Out Foundation, which is "a support and advocacy organization dedicated to making a significant and identifiable difference in the lives of breast cancer patients and their families by supporting clinical trials, increasing compassionate support services and educating communities".

Both the JV team, coached by Elaine Kelly, and the Varsity team, coached by Maryann Martin, defeated Shoreham Wading River High School's teams at the event on October 26th.

The high school gym was a sea of pink, with banners, pink balloons, pink tee shirts and food and beverages.  Pink paper volleyballs adorned the gym walls to honor those who have survived breast cancer or have succumbed to breast cancer.

There were at least 50 raffle baskets, including a Vera Bradley collection, a $200 Apple Store gift card, and thanks to the Swan Lake Golf Club, greens fees with carts, for a foursome.

Many businesses donated items to be raffled off, including McNulty's, Flair, Miller Place Bagels, Tanger Outlets, Paws and Claws, House of Style, Hartlin Inn, Edible Arrangements, Laurieanne's Boutique, Long Island Best Bagels, Neat and Complete Barber, Aragona's Pizzeria, The Milk Pail, Echo Pharmacy, Hands on Nails, Brian's Aquarium, Town and Country Deli, Angel Tips, Tricia's Step 'N Style, North Shore Advanced Eye Care, Powerhouse Gym, Evolusion Fitness, Swan Lake Golf Club and the Miller Place PTO.

Miller Place High School teachers Mrs. Danowski, Mrs. French, Ms. Rodriguez and Mrs. Schulken, as well as students from the high school's Service Club and National Honor Society were instrumental in the success of Dig Pink.  Our principal, Mr. Slavin and our athletic director, Ms. Lally, were a huge support.

Nine local Girl Scout troops from Service Unit 4 donated raffle baskets and made banners.

If anyone would like to make a donation to the Side-Out Foundation, here is the link:

Thank you so much to all of our sponsors and everyone who came to support us at Dig Pink!  Go Panthers!
