Miller Place Girls Basketball Loses in Playoffs to Shoreham-Wading River

The Panthers season came to an end Tuesday afternoon after a 55-38 playoff loss.

The Miller Place girls basketball team’s season ended Tuesday evening with a 55-38 loss to the Shoreham-Wading River Wildcats in the first round of the Class A playoffs.

Miller Place entered the playoffs after finishing 6-6 in league play during the regular season.

The Panthers got down early after a tough full court press by the Wildcats forced numerous turnovers that led to easy buckets. Miller Place was limited to just 14 points in the first half, with its two top players - Brea Greene and Marlaina Sherman - scoring eight of those points.

“We didn’t play well from start to finish,” head coach Liz Borsetti said. “We had been playing much better ball but we did not play to our level.”

Greene was visibly frustrated that her shot was not falling throughout the first half, routinely flailing her arms in the air. She came out stronger in the second half - scoring 12 of her teams 14 points in the third quarter - but the Panthers were never able to get back within single digits.

“There’s nothing to say, offensively, defensively we didn’t play well,” Borsetti said.

The Panthers did go on an 8-0 run midway through the third quarter to cut their deficit to 13, but that was as close as they would get. Before the run, Miller Place’s only basket of the quarter was a three-pointer by Greene, who finished with 23 points. They also went 0-6 from the free throw line at the beginning of the quarter.

“We’re capable of playing a heck of a lot better than we did and we didn’t,” Borsetti said. “Nothing else there.”

The Wildcats move on to play No.1 Elwood on Saturday, Feb. 26 at 3:30 p.m.

Borsetti was not happy while talking about the game but did say that one of the girls goals before the season was to make the playoffs.

“It was an OK season," she said. "They made playoffs, that was their goal. They achieved their goal - it wasn’t to lose in the first round, but, we just didn’t show up today.”
