After getting drafted by the New York Yankees in 2009, Miller Place High School grad and Canisius alum Kevin Mahoney has climbed the ranks to the 'AA' Trenton Thunder and is making a name for himself.
In 41 games, Mahoney is hitting .295 with five home runs and 17 RBIs while playing solid defense at third base.
At Canisius, Mahoney was selected 2009 MAAC Player of the Year and 2008 Rawlings Coastal Plains Offensive Player of the Year. He left as the school's all-time leader in runs scored (202), hits (317) and RBIs (130). During his Miller Place years, he lettered in football, basketball and baseball and was named All-State, All-County and league MVP as a high school senior in 2005.
The lifelong Yankees fan was recently interviewed by The Trentonian and talked about growing up watching the Yankees and how it felt to get drafted by his favorite team.
From The Trentonian:
“When we first heard my name, we didn’t know who drafted me,” he said, retelling the story. “We went back and saw that it was the Yankees, and we were like ‘no way!’ It was unreal."
