Mt. Sinai Run Over By Amityville Ground Game

Mt. Sinai fans had good reason to believe they could defeat pre-season top-ranked Amityville in Saturday’s Division IV semi-final match-up. Only one month ago, the Mustangs defeated the Warrior’s in dramatic fashion.

But there would be no last-minute heroics this time.

Led by the ground attack of running back Da’Rell Hatcher and quarterback Sean Walters, Amityville scored on their first possession and never looked back, defeating Mt. Sinai 40 – 7.

Mt. Sinai’s first drive would be a sign of things to come. Starting at their own 35, they moved the ball up field on the running of Mark Donadio, crossing into Amityville territory. But with a first-and-10 from the Amityville 43, the Mustangs self-destructed. An illegal motion penalty and a sack of quarterback Austin Kay forced the Mustangs to punt back at their own 45. Then, the snap sailed high and Amityville took over at the Mt. Sinai 25, eventually scoring on a Walters to Hatcher five-yard pass.

A 6 – 0  first quarter score was extended in the opening moments of the second, when Hatcher scored his second of three first-half touchdowns. With Mt. Sinai unable to generate much offense, Amityville took a 34 – 0 lead into halftime.

The Mustangs finally got on the board midway through the third when Kay connected with tight end James Grau for a 79-yard catch-and-run down to the Amityville 1 yard line. Kay took it in from there, with Mike Faughnan adding the extra point.

Following the game, Mt. Sinai coach Vinnie Ammirato declined comment, saying only, “We got beat. That’s my quote.”
