Panthers Notebook: Softball Wins Three of Four

Softball at 10-5 in League VI.

Boys Lacrosse

The Panthers went 1-1 during the week with a 13-8 loss to undefeated Comsewogue (11-0) and a 15-1 win over winless Center Moriches (0-11).

On Tuesday, the Panthers gave Comsewogue a run and were down just one, 8-7, heading into the fourth. Five fourth quarter goals by Comsewogue, however, sealed it as James Read, Jack Martocello, Ryan Dunne's two-goal games went to naught.

The Panthers took care of business Thursday led by Ryan Callahan's four goals in an easy 15-1 win. Matt Hin made six saves in net, allowing just one goal behind a strong defensive front.

Miller Place stands at 6-4 in League II play with three crucial games to go. This week they play Eastport-South Manor (8-3) on Wednesday, May 11 at 4:30 p.m. and Harborfields (6-3) on Friday, May 13 at 4 p.m.

Girls Lacrosse

The Panthers beat Islip 15-8 on May 2, but lost to Rocky Point 14-10 on May 4 and won a grueling double overtime game early this week on Monday, May 9, 18-16 over Westhampton.

Casey Brown had four goals in the 15-8 win over Islip, while Kristen Ierna led the Panthers with six goals in Monday's 18-16 win over Westhampton.

Miller Place sits at 5-7 with just two games left. They play Sayville at home Thursday, may 12 at 4 p.m. and wrap up the season against Southampton on Monday, May 16. 

Baseball

The Panthers lost a series with Shoreham Wading River (11-4) two games to one.

Miller Place dropped the first two games in the series but came back to avoid the sweep with a win in the final game.

Game 1 spanned 13 innings over two days before SWR's Andrew Nicchi drove in the winning run in the top of the 13th against Nick Acevedo, who took the loss for the Panthers in the 6-5 game.

Game 2 was all SWR as Acevedo took the loss again in a 12-3 defeat. Cody McPartland earned the win in Game 3 behind a home run from Dan Smith, a game-tying bases load walk by Acevedo and the game-winning fielder's choice from Matt Crimi.

The Panthers began a three-game series with Westhampton Monday, May 9 and won, 11-3 behind the pitching of Justin Willig, who struck out seven to earn the victory.

They will conclude the series against Westhampton with 4 p.m. games on Wednesday and Thursday.

Softball

The Panthers have won three of their last four; a 12-0 win over Harborfields May 2, a 13-1 win over Westhampton May 5, a 3-2 loss to Eastport-South Manor May 7 and a 15-1 win over Glenn May 9.

Tori Carlo earned wins over Harborfields and Glenn, while Jackie Gallagher earned the win against Weshtampton and took the loss to ESM.

Marlaina Sherman has hit three home runs in the past four games and has four on the season which is good for a tie for 13th place overall on Long Island.

At 10-5 the Panthers are in second place in League VI standings behind Sayville (10-3). They face Rocky Point Thursday at 4 p.m. at

 

Badminton

The boys lost to Smithtown West, 7-2 on May 3 and Smithtown East, 6-3 on May 5. The girls defeated Smithtown East, 7-2 on May 5.

Golf

Miller Place earned its first victory of the season on Tuesday, May 3 with a 6.5-2.5 victory over Comsewogue (2-8). The Panthers lost 9-0 to Middle Country on Thursday, May 5 and are 1-9 in conference play.

Tennis

The Panthers lost to Sachem East 6-1 on Monday, May 2.
