Panthers Scoreboard: Boys and Girls Basketball Teams Stay In Playoff Hunt

Boys must win both remaining games to make playoffs, girls just one.

The Panthers played two games last week; one against crosstown rival Rocky Point and the other against a tough Kings Park Squad.

On Thursday, the Panthers tried to avenge an earlier loss to Rocky Point but fell short once again in a 66-51 defeat. The Eagles win was just their second of the season and both have come against Miller Place.

The Eagles had four players in double digits while center Andreas Vouliakis recorded a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Jack Hepburn led the scoring for Miller Place with 12 while Steve Jackolski added 10 points in the loss which dropped the Panthers to 3-6 in League V.

Sitting at 3-6 with three games remaining and six wins needed to make the playoffs, the Panthers find themselves in a must-win situation which began Friday against Kings Park.

The Panthers found a hero in Nick Parrella who, after the Panthers led 21-16 entering halftime, helped stave off a push by Kings Park with 13 of his 20 points in the second half to seal a 50-46 win and keep their playoff hopes alive. Steve Jackolski added 11 points while Danny Finta grabbed 11 rebounds.

What's Next?

The Panthers now sit at 4-6 and travel to Sayville Tuesday, Feb. 8 to take on the Golden Flashes (1-8). If they win that game, they face a win-and-in scenario away at first-place Harborfields (9-0) on Tuesday, Feb. 15. The Panthers beat Sayville 62-60 back on Jan. 11 but fell to Harborfields 94-54 Jan. 18.

Girls Basketball

The girls also played both Rocky Point and Kings Park this week but with mirrored results from the boys.

On Thursday, the Panthers took down Rocky Point 62-44 to earn their fifth win of the season and send the Eagles to their tenth league loss.

Marlaina Sherman completely took over the game with astronomical numbers. Sherman had career-high's in points with 32 and rebounds with 23 while providing more than half of the scoring for the Panthers. Brea Greene added 12 points and nine assists in the win.

On Friday the Panthers tried to avenge a 69-53 loss to Kings Park (9-1) back on Jan.4, but couldn't figure them out once again in a 61-50 loss that sent the Panthers to 5-5.

Greene and Sherman led the Panthers with 18 points apiece but didn't get much help as four other players combined for just 14 points. Kings Park's Marion Kawecki led her team with 16 points.

What's Next?

The Panthers have two games remaining and need to win one in order to make the playoffs. They play Sayville (1-9) at home this Tuesday and Harborfields (9-0) at home next Tuesday. The Panthers beat Sayville 50-40 on Jan. 11 but lost to Harborfields 82-57 on Jan. 18.
