Playoff Roundup: Football Teams Advance, Miller Place Field Hockey Earns Title

A roundup of how the local squads fared in the playoffs over the weekend

Varsity sports playoffs began over the weekend after a delay due to the effects of Hurricane Sandy. Many local teams took part in the action, working to earn division and county titles. Here's a look at how local squads fared:

Miller Place

Football

The Panthers disposed of Bellport for the second straight week, but this time it was the playoffs and helped Miller Place advance to the Div. III semifinals. Adin Greenfield ran for 153 yards and three touchdowns to lead the No. 2 seed to its eighth win of the year. The team will now take on No. 3 seed Westhampton at Miller Place High School Nov. 17 at 1 p.m.

Field Hockey

A playoff win over Shoreham-Wading River Saturday sent the undefeated No. 1 seed Panthers into a matchup against rival Rocky Point for the Suffolk Class B Championship Monday. Miller Place's Jamie Emma scored early in the first half and the team never looked back in a 1-0 victory to earn its 19th County Championship. The Panthers will face Manhasset in the Long Island Championship 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Girls Soccer

The No. 5 Panthers lost to No. 4 Harborfield Friday in a Suffolk Class A quarterfinals matchup.

Boys Soccer

After earning the No. 7 seed and Class A quarterfinals matchup with No. 2 East Hampton, the Panthers hung tough but ultimately fell to the Bonackers, 1-0.

Girls Volleyball

With the No. 9 seed, the Panthers faced rival Rocky Point, the No. 8 seed in a qualifying round matchup Nov. 8. The game, held in Rocky Point, went to five sets before the Panthers ultimately lost in the fifth and final set, 25-21, to lose the game 3-2.

Mount Sinai

Football

A 14-point first quarter helped lead the Mustangs to a 20-14 victory over Glenn in the quarterfinals. Mike Donadio ran 14 times for 168 yards and two touchdowns to help set up a Div. IV semifinal matchup with No. 3 Shoreham-Wading River

Shoreham-Wading River

Football

Tyler Anderson's four rushing touchdowns led No. 3 Shoreham-Wading River over No. 6 Stony Brook. The Wildcats advance to the semis and will take on No. 2 Mt. Sinai.

Field Hockey

After a 2-0 first-round shutout victory over Harborfields, the Wildcats struggled to keep pace with Miller Place, losing 3-1.

Boys Soccer

The sixth-seeded Wildcats took No. 3 Eastport-South Manor all the way to double overtime before ultimately falling short in a 2-1 loss.

Rocky Point

Field Hockey

The No. 2 seed Eagles defeated Sayville in overtime 3-2 Saturday thanks to a game-winning goal by Maggie DeFrank. The team then took on No. 1 Miller Place in the Suffolk Class B Finals but couldn't overcome an early goal and lost, 1-0.

Girls Volleyball

No. 8 Rocky Point played rival Miller Place in a qualifying round matchup Nov. 8. The game, held in Rocky Point, went to five sets before the Eagles clinched a 3-2 win with a 25-21 win in the final set.

Bravo MP Majority, very well said.Teachers are the most protected job on the planet. Now if theyRead More could only earn that money by producing results in the classrooms like they used to. But I also blame the absent NO vote. They need to be sent a message-we need a majority no vote but that will never happen. Glad I am out of here in 2 years. Can't imagine trying to live here and pay these taxes on social security and my 401K that tanked in 2008 while I was making up the teachers loss on their pension and paying my health insurance & theirs at the same time. So boo hoo teachers you have to spend money on the kids while I spend money on you.

Did you know that the average school teacher is only paying 15% of theRead More actual cost of health care premiums for themselves and their families, when Medical healthcare insurance premiums are rising at an alarming 17% per annum? Do you realize that teachers are paid an additional stipend if they work more than 3 consecutive periods in a day? Are you aware that teacher pensions were protected during the stock market crash of 2008, when the average person's 401K was totally at risk? Perhaps if teachers realized how good they have it - look at the BIG picture and outside of their bubble - then they would complain less. Oh and yes, we need our loftily-paid Administrators to kick in some of the salaries, to help pay for stuff. Hard to believe the school districts' mantras that "it's all for the kids".
