Last night after soccer practice, I drove to a new local hang out, Kreators Bar and Art Gallery (340 Rt 25A in Mt Sinai) to watch a soccer match and have a pint of locally brewed beer. While sitting at the bar hoping that my team would score a goal, I couldn't help but overhear the conversation between the two guys sitting next to me. "You know, the whole world of book publishing is changing," said one of the guys. "In two years, eighty percent of the books published will be self-published." "That's cool," said the other guy. "Now we can decide what we want to read, rather than letting the publishing gatekeepers decide for us." I was impressed. I'm sitting at a bar on 25A watching a soccer match and there's intelligent conversation about the publishing industry going on. And immediately, I imagined that in Rocky Point and Miller Place and all along the North Shore there's probably a hundred writers who all labor away on books that we readers might never learn about. What about a local author book fair? Meet your neighbor, the novelist. Or the gal down the street whose written a beautifully illustrated book for children. And that green thumb on your block who has a self-published gardening book...
