Miller Place Eagle Scouts Recognized for Community Involvement

Scouts recognized for community projects.

Eagle Scouts Kevin Anderson and Alex Abrams of Troop 204 in Miller Place were recently recognized for completing charitable projects in the community.

Abrams, a Miller Place grad, repaired and renovated informational kiosks located in the Pine Barrens. Prior to their renovation, the fiberglass panels on the kiosks were broken and they were covered top to bottom in graffiti. With the help of fellow scouts, family and leaders he was able to revitalize the kiosks and remove the copious amounts of trash dumped onto the sites.

Anderson, a Port Jefferson High School senior and soon-to-be grad, constructed two large rolling prop cabinets for use by the Port Jefferson High School Drama Department. He raised funds for the project by holding two fundraising nights at a local Wendy's.

He then used the funds to purchase all building materials to complete the project, and with the help of volunteers was able to complete construction. Lastly, excess funds of $450 raised were donated to the school and used to purchase permanent auditorium decorations.

“I applaud these outstanding young men for their commitment to make a difference in the community through scouting,” said Councilwoman Jane Bonner. “Achieving the rank of Eagle Scout is a great honor that they should be very proud of.”

To become an Eagle Scout, a scout must earn a minimum of 21 merit badges, demonstrate leadership, and perform their approved community service project.
