Excessive Heat Breaks Record Temps, Keeps Going

Don't expect to feel relief until Sunday, experts say.

Scorching hot temperatures have broken several records across Long Island this week, as daily highs climb toward triple digits.

The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat advisory for Friday, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., as temperatures are predicted to break record highs again for a second time this week. A heat advisory is issued when a combination of heat and humidity is expected to make the temperature feel like it’s 105 degrees or higher.

“We’re keeping an eye on today to see what it gets up to,” said meteorologist Lauren Nash, looking at temperatures in Islip and Westhampton Beach. “It could be warmer today than yesterday, we’re at  88 and 90 degrees as of 11 a.m.”

Nash, who works at the National Weather Service station in Upton, said Islip-MacArthur Airport recorded a high of 94 degrees on Tuesday, breaking the previous record of 93 degrees set in 1993.

Temperatures have continued to climb as the heat wave drags. Islip-MacArthur Airport recorded its highest temperature at 95 on Thursday, while Westhampton Beach hit a peak of 97 degrees and Montauk reached 93 degrees.

However, it was Thursday night that will make it into the record books, according to Nash. She said the overnight low only dipped to 76 at the official Islip-MacArthur station, two degrees higher than the previous low temperature of 74 set on July 18, 2010.

There is relief in sight, according to Nash.

“Tomorrow will be cooler; the big relief is going to be on Sunday,” she said.

Nash predicated a cool front is expected to reach Long Island by Saturday afternoon, creating possible showers and thunderstorms.

Residents are advised to take precautions if spending any time outdoors, keeping activity to the early morning or evening hours if possible. Make sure to wear light-colored, loose clothing and drink plenty of water.
