Weekend Guide: Strawberry Festival, Wrestling Fundraiser & More

Patch picks for weekend fun.

If Memorial Day weekend was the unofficial kickoff for summer, then we're already in full-swing. Here's a look at both local and regional events coming up this weekend.

MILLER PLACE-ROCKY POINT

Sports

  • Support the Mt. Sinai Girls Lacrosse squad as they travel to Cortland to take on Honeyoe Falls-Lima in the semifinals of the state championships Friday at 2:30 p.m. Should they win, they then advance to the finals Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
Recreation
  • It’s a Yoga Jam in Rocky Point Saturday morning. Starting at 8:30 a.m. join Amy Perri some fast-pace, ‘adventurous’ yoga. Call 631-839-0644 to reserve your spot in the $12 class.
Fundraisers
  • On Sunday from 2-6 p.m. there is a fundraiser at Carmody's Restaurant and Public House in Rocky Point to help send the New York National Wrestling team to Orlando, Fla. on June 27 - July 2 for the wrestling dual national championship.
Festivals
  • The annual Strawberry Festival is here. Enjoy a huge tag sale, food, games, a waffle eating contest, cupcake bake off, bake sale, vendors and, of course...strawberries. Festivities begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church.

PORT JEFFERSON

Festivals
  • An outdoor craft fair will be held Sunday at North Shore Jewish Center on Old Town Road in Port Jefferson Station on Sunday starting at 10 a.m.
  • The 14th annual “Hounds on the Sound” event, hosted by Save-a-Pet at Memorial Park in Port Jefferson, will feature live music, food, vendors, contests, raffles and of course pets for adoption between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Snapping pics of cute pups while you’re there? Tag them on Twitter and Instagram with the hashtag #PatchHounds and we’ll include them in a gallery of photos after the event.
Kids & Family
  • The Maritime Explorium will offer an educational children’s activity – “Water Wheel” – on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Music
  • On Friday, Port Jefferson’s Dipamkara Meditation Center introduces World Peace Café, a monthly music event featuring a meditation session at 7:30 p.m. with live jazz starting at 8 p.m. ($10).
Entertainment
  • Catch a showing of “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” at Theatre Three on Friday at Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 7 p.m.
  • Also at Theatre Three, you’ll find comedy at Friday Night Face-Off starting at 10:30 p.m.
Benefit
  • Join New York Families Against Bullying on Saturday at 10 a.m. at Mt. Sinai’s Heritage Park for a walk-a-thon to raise money to help bring anti-bullying programs to local schools. Food & Drink
  • Brewtopia in Harbor Square Mall will do a free beer tasting on Saturday at 2 p.m. featuring brews from Maine’s Shipyard Brewing Company.

  • “Local Color” is a two-part show at Gallery North that kicks off Friday with a focus on digital media and photography. Check out an ArTalk with some of the artists discussing their work on Sunday at 3 p.m.
Festivals
  • The Caroline Church will hold its annual country fair on Saturday starting at 10 a.m. on the Setauket Village Green.
Benefit
  • charity roller derby bout is set for Saturday at World Gym Setauket at 8 p.m. to benefit the Suffolk County Coalition Against Domestic Violence. Will you be taking pics at the roller derby?   • On Sunday at 5 p.m., check out “Songs of Strength: A Musical Movement Against Bullies,” a fundraiser for an anti-bullying organization at Frank Melville Memorial Park ($10).
  • If you’ve got used soccer equipment in good condition you’d like to donate, bring it down to the South P Lot at Stony Brook University to donate it to the Three Village Soccer Clubfor underprivileged kids in Africa.
Historical
  • Join the Three Village Historical Society for a Village Green walking tour on Sunday at 2 p.m., starting at the Setauket Neighborhood House. More details here.
