Weird News: Urine, Rancid Coffee … Same Difference

Some stories are downright strange. Here's our wrap-up from around Suffolk County.

As a local news organization, Patch covers stories of all kinds, from heartbreaking tragedies to inspiring tales of community brotherhood. But some stories are just plain weird. Here are some of the stranger headlines from the past seven days.

Pee Cup? False Alarm

According to police, a woman called 911 Sept. 5 after she thought a man urinated in a cup and dumped it out of the window of a parked car on Main Street in Northport.

Northport Police located the vehicle, which was unoccupied at the time, and found the alleged suspect in a local business. Upon questioning, the man stated that he threw a rancid cup of coffee out the window and was within the coffee shop to get a new one.

When police interviewed the caller, she stated that she did not actually see the subject's genitals and was not positive if he did in fact urinate in a cup within a parked vehicle. No further police action was taken.

Police Seek Missing Headstone

Suffolk Police are seeking the public’s help in getting a found headstone back to its proper burial place.

A 17-year-old discovered a headstone on a trail in the woods near the northbound Heckscher Parkway in Great River and called the Third Precinct to make a report.

6,000 Square Feet Could be Yours … For 1$ Million

A property, south of the highway in Wainscott that's less than a quarter of an acre in size, is up for grabs. The owner, the Bridgehampton Fire District, and they won't accept anything less than $925,000.

The fire district has owned the .14-acre vacant parcel at 113 Wainscott Main Street, on the north side of the street, for 40 years. "We never had a use for it," Steven Halsey, the chairman of the board of fire commissioners, said.

The property only measures 60-by-100 feet, making it 6,000 square feet. According to surveys, it could only hold a house that a little bigger than 700 square feet, while meeting all front, side and rear setbacks.

Men Battle Crocodile

Two Holtsville men recently battled a crocodile while on vacation in Cancun, according to a report on the New York Post.

According to the report, Edward Lunger, 50, was playing golf at the Iberostar Cancun Golf Club in Mexico with a friend when he hooked the ball to the left of the fairway, causing it to land in the sand.

Lunger’s friend Mark Martin, 52 of Holtsville, told the Post that after chipping the ball out, a female crocodile leaped up and bit down on Lunger’s left arm up to his elbow.

Lunger said the crocodile pulled him back and flipped him to the ground. Lunger says that he was able to pull himself out, although he does not remember how he did it.

Martin said that he grabbed a 40-pound boulder and smashed it onto the crocodile’s head just as Lunger freed himself.

Lunger had lost his middle finger and most of his ring finger from the battle, but doctors were able to re-attach his initially lost index finger.
