Rocky Point family band making the rounds on Long Island.
Rick and Georgianne Jackofsky of Rocky Point haven't owned a TV for about 20 years. But it's part of their family's story – a family that plays music together and tours as the Homegrown String Band. Years ago, when Rick Jackofsky owned a photography lab, he'd come home and want to spend quality time with his family without relying on TV for entertainment. "So instead I read books out loud and we played music and we played board games," Georgianne Jackofsky said. "That was the way we entertained ourselves. That’s how we got so close and stayed together all these years." Together with daughters Erica and Annalee, now 27 and 24, Rick and Georgianne started the Homegrown String Band, which has played anywhere from 30 to 60 shows a year since …

According to a report in the Village Beacon Record, a Virgin Mary statue was recently stolen from the Little Portion Friary on Old Post Road in Mt. Sinai. While the brothers have not reported it to the police, they are hoping whoever stole it is nice enough to return it. The three-and-a-half-foot statue, which was purchased two years ago to replace one that had been there since the 1930s. was missing for a few days before the brothers noticed. Looser restrictions mean more and bigger fish for anglers.
Ask the average fisherman and he’ll tell you that the less restriction on fishing the better. More fish, bigger fish and a longer season means more fun out on the water. Just this month, the New York State Department of Conservation loosened restrictions on fluke, porgy and black sea bass, meaning that the agency thinks the populations of those species are healthy and plentiful. “These regulation changes reflect improvements to populations of scup [porgy], black sea bass and summer flounder [fluke],” said Kathy Moser, DEC Assistant Commissioner for Natural Resources, in a statement announcing the expansion. Moser pointed to porgy – a popular game fish among kids and adults – as being particularly robust. Fishermen and bait and tackle shop …

Officers spotted man who they say had multiple DWI convictions blowing a red light on Route 83.
A 53-year old Lake Ronkonkoma man who, according to police, has had his license suspended 23 times and was driving with a license already revoked for multiple DWI-offenses, was arrested on DWI charges after Suffolk County Police pulled him over in Mount Sinai early Thursday morning. At about 1:45 a.m., Steven Turner, from the Suffolk County Police Safe-T Section, said he saw a 1994 Chevrolet pick-up truck making a left turn through a red light at the intersection of Route 83 and Coram-Mt. Four dogs featured need a loving home.
Save-a-Pet Animal Rescue of Port Jefferson Station is featuring four of their dogs who are available for adoption. Flurry, named for her beautiful white coat, is a 7-month-old American Eskimo who was born and raised at Save-A-Pet after her mother would no longer nurse her. Although Flurry was born with a leg defect and is unable to bend her front legs, this doesn’t slow her down one bit. She enjoys chasing wild birds and squirels and would do best with some obedience classes and structure in her new home. Although she loves cats, Flurry needs a home without children. Shadow is a gorgeous Labrador Retriever Mix. This young mom delivered a litter several months ago and all of her puppies have been adopted. Shadow has since been spayed and is…
