Five teens were indicted this week in relation to six incidents, including five burglaries, spanning from Selden to Miller Place to Setauket.
A handful of teens were indicted this week after being accused of burglarizing several residential homes, including two in Miller Place which reportedly occurred in mid-April. Suffolk County Police announced on May 3 that they had arrested four individuals after pulling them over on Black Locust Avenue in Setauket. An indictment unsealed this week added a fifth teen - the twin brother of one defendant. According to the office of District Attorney Thomas Spota, the Miller Place burglaries occurred on Niagara Street and View Drive, and were two of four which reportedly took place within an eight-day stretch. Officers spotted man who they say had multiple DWI convictions blowing a red light on Route 83.
A 53-year old Lake Ronkonkoma man who, according to police, has had his license suspended 23 times and was driving with a license already revoked for multiple DWI-offenses, was arrested on DWI charges after Suffolk County Police pulled him over in Mount Sinai early Thursday morning. At about 1:45 a.m., Steven Turner, from the Suffolk County Police Safe-T Section, said he saw a 1994 Chevrolet pick-up truck making a left turn through a red light at the intersection of Route 83 and Coram-Mt. Three Village John Maggio, 20, of Stony Brook, was arrested May 8 in Setauket and charged with second-degree burglary. Maggio allegedly entered a home on Balin Avenue in Centereach and stole property. Jerrod Lafonte, 26, of Stony Brook, was arrested May 8 in East Setauket and charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance. Police stopped him at a business located at 5000 Nesconset Highway in East Setauket and allegedly found heroin in his car. Gilberto Martir, 52, of Rocky Point, was arrested May 7 in Rocky Point and charged with petty larceny. Martir allegedly stole a hair product from the CVS in Rocky Point. Richard Wersan, 24, of Mt. Sinai, was arrested May 10 in Mt. Sinai and charged with second degree burglary. Wersan allegedly broke into a home and stole cash. Police said Wersan used a ladder, climbed onto the roof, cut a screen in the master bedroom bathroom and entered the house. Ian Goldwasser, 19, of Mt. Sinai, was arrested May 10 in Selden and charged with petty larceny. Goldwasser allegedly took a high-lift bumper jack off a 1992 Jeep Wrangler. Crash joins long list of accidents at the intersection of Route 25A and Miller Place Road.
The Miller Place Fire Department responded to another accident at the intersection of Route 25A and Miller Place Road Sunday morning. The accident sent one child to John T. Mather Memorial Hospital with very minor injuries, according the Miller Place Fire Department First Assistant Chief Kyle Markott. Chief Carl Schroeter was in charge of MPFD operations at the scene. The accident is the second in a week at the intersection, joining the long list of recent crashes at that location this year alone.

New officers recognized by Brookhaven Town officials at annual installation.
Newly installed Mount Sinai Fire Department officers were presented with certificates of recognition by Brookhaven Town officials at the department's May 5 installation. Councilwoman Jane Bonner and Brookhaven Town Chief of Staff Brian Beedenbender were guest speakers at the event. “It is a real pleasure to come out and support some of our area’s local heroes," Bonner said. "I can’t say enough about the great work that the volunteers of the Mount Sinai Fire Department do on a daily basis for this community. I thank them for their continued commitment to keeping our residents safe.”

An 87-year old Port Jefferson Station woman was found dead in a car that had been submerged in the water off the Brookhaven Town docks on West Broadway in Port Jefferson Thursday morning. After a 911 caller tipped off police at 6:43 a.m. that a car was in Port Jefferson Harbor with only the roof visible, police discovered Anne Murray, 87, of Brook Lane inside. She was the only occupant of the white Toyota Corolla. Murray was transported to St. Charles Hospital in Port Jefferson where she was pronounced dead. Police say that they do not know yet how the car got into the water. Suffolk County homicide detectives are investigating the death. Wesley Skiffington, 22, of Selden, was arrested May 2 in Stony Brook and charged with first-offense DWI. Police arrested Skiffington at 1:49 a.m., after stopping him for failing to maintain his lane while driving southbound on Nicolls Rd. Two-car collision gives four minor injuries Tuesday night.
In the latest of a string of accidents at the intersection of 25A and Miller Place Road, Police said four were sent to Mather Hospital Tuesday night with minor injuries after a two-car collision. At approximately 10 p.m. Tuesday a gray mini van heading eastbound on 25A t-boned a sedan making a left onto Miller Place Road from the westbound lane of 25A, according to Police. The driver of the sedan and three of the four people in the mini van were sent to the hospital with minor injuries. The intersection has proved to be one of the more dangerous on Long Island with a handful of serious accidents already in 2012. Most recently, two were sent to the hospital in a collision at the intersection which also resulted in a fuel spill.
