Anglers and Bait Shop Owners Have Mixed Feelings Over New Fishing Regs

Looser restrictions mean more and bigger fish for anglers.

Ask the average fisherman and he’ll tell you that the less restriction on fishing the better. More fish, bigger fish and a longer season means more fun out on the water. Just this month, the New York State Department of Conservation loosened restrictions on fluke, porgy and black sea bass, meaning that the agency thinks the populations of those species are healthy and plentiful. “These regulation changes reflect improvements to populations of scup [porgy], black sea bass and summer flounder [fluke],” said Kathy Moser, DEC Assistant Commissioner for Natural Resources, in a statement announcing the expansion. Suffolk Lacrosse Playoffs Begin This Week

West Islip is the top seed for boys; Ward Melville is No. 1 girls team.

Lacrosse is a Long Island state of mind, and nothing showcased that more than the state playoffs a year ago. Three Long Island boys squads played in state title games, which ended with Farmingdale hoisting its first Class A plaque.  It could have easily been West Islip instead. The teams played a thrilling Long Island championship game decided in overtime. West Islip, after all, has worn four of the last six state crowns.  Perennial girls lacrosse power Northport finally broke through and won its first state Class A championship. In fact, Long Island girls teams have won nine of 10 possible state class titles (A, B, C) since 2009. But the first step is winning Suffolk, which begins with boys and girls lacrosse playoff games this week. The …

Sports Roundup: Rocky Point Alum Leads Syracuse to Big East Lax Title

Tommy Palasek had a career-high en route to a victory in the Big East Championship.

Local college athletes recently made headlines, and there were a few noteworthy happenings in the local sports scene as well. Rocky Point alum Tommy Palasek led the Syracuse men’s lacrosse team to a victory in the inaugural BIG EAST Men's Lacrosse Championship Saturday with a career-high tying six points. The Orangemen won 12-4 over St. John’s for a spot in the NCAA Tournament. Syracuse faces Duke in the first-round of the NCAA Tournament Saturday. The honors continued for the Rocky Point High School Cheerleading National Championship team as Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker presented a certificate of congratulations to the team at the General Meeting of the Legislature on April 24th. Rocky Point Alumni Qualifies for US Olympic Trials

Melissa Salerno qualifies for Olympic Trials with run at Stanford Sunday.

Melissa Salerno, Rocky Point Class of 2004, has qualified for the 2012 USA Olympic Trials in the 1500 meter run. Her time of 4:12.82 at Stanford University Sunday enables her to compete for a spot at the 2012 London Olympics. She is currently sponsored by New Balance.  Salerno, a 2008 graduate of Fordham University, earned multiple school and conference honors in her four years on the Cross Country team. In her years at Rocky Point High School, she was a member of the varsity cross country, track and soccer teams. She holds the school record for most consecutive state meets with nine and was the team MVP for indoor and outdoor track four times, while receiving the honor three times for cross country. Sports Roundup: Local Baseball Teams Top League, College Stars Shine

Miller Place and Rocky Point varsity baseball both at top of league, Miller Place alum leads all college freshman in three point shooting percentage.

Local college athletes recently made headlines, and there were a few noteworthy happenings in the local sports scene as well. Morrisville State freshman Jack Martocello, a Miller Place alum, scored four goals for the men's lacrosse team in a recent 15-13 win. Martocello's team remains undefeated in conference play. Miller Place grad Jack Hepburn, now playing basketball at Green Mountain College, recently finished a strong freshman season. Hepburn ranked number one amongst freshman in the entire nation in three point shooting percentage (37.4%) and was the number two freshman in the nation in three points made per contest (2.5). Jesse Dietrichson recently helped lead the Miller Place badminton team to a 9-0 win over Commack by defeating …

Sports Roundup: Little League Opens, Local Grad Throws Perfect Game

A look at the local sports scene and local college athletes.

A local college athlete recently made headlines, and there were a few noteworthy happenings in the local sports scene as well. Rocky Point High School graduate Brittany Stevenson and sophomore at Haverford College tossed a perfect game April 5 to lead the Haverford varsity softball team to a 7-0 win over Gwynedd-Mercy College. Stevenson faced just 15 batters in the five inning game and struck out six. The North Shore Little League held its opening day April 14 as teams ushered in the season with a full slate of games. Former Major Leaguer and Smithtown product Frank Catalanotto was on hand to speak with the young ballplayers, joined by local politicians Sen. Ken LaValle, Legis. State Sen. Ken LaValle congratulated the Rocky Point cheerleaders on their National Championship.

State Sen. Ken LaValle, R-Port Jefferson, recently congratulated the Rocky Point Varsity Cheerleading squad on their second consecutive National Championship. LaValle spoke on the Senate Floor and commended the team, who was on hand, on their efforts. "You don't win a National Championship two years in a row without good synergy between every one of the members of the squad," he said. Chloe Jung from North Country Middle School won first place in figure skating at the Empire State Games in February. The 6th grader was honored for her excellence in figure skating and competed against the best figure skaters in the State at the Empire Games in Lake Placid.

Schedule Set for Second Annual Rocky Point Spring Fest

A full day of athletics and family activities at Rocky Point Spring Fest.

The schedule is set for the second annual Rocky Point School District Spring Fest to be held April 28. Starting at 9 a.m. all the way through 3 p.m., the Rocky Point varsity and junior varsity sports teams will compete at the Frank J. Mission Fencing Can Help College Hopefuls Make Final Cut

With athletics and clubs in danger for local students, Rocky Point home to premier fencing center.

With cuts to athletics and extracurricular activities a possibility either this year or in the near future at local school districts, students may be left searching for a way to separate themselves from the pack in their college applications. One local option for students is one of the lesser-known sports with one of the richer histories: fencing. Fencing is one of only four sports to be included in every modern Olympic Games, since the first in 1896. It is also the only combat sport with no weight classes. Madonna, Tom Cruise, Will Smith and David Beckham...what do they have in common? Aside from being famous celebrities, they are also fencers.
