This accident would not have been avoided by this suggestion. This was caused by a young driver not paying attention to the stopped traffic in front of her and rear-ending someone. I do agree that this may help some future accidents.   more ›

Family Seeks 'Wall of Heroes' Honor for Fallen Firefighter DiBernardo

Online petition seeks to have Joey DiBernardo's name added to the FDNY's Wall of Heroes.

His family and friends will testify: it's unquestionably true that Joseph DiBernardo Jr., was devoted to his work as a FDNY Rescue 3 firefighter and Setauket Fire Department volunteer. According to his father, Joseph DiBernardo Sr., it's also unquestionably true that his son "Joey D", who lived in Miller Place, died as an eventual result of the injuries he sustained from the Black Sunday fire in January of 2005. On that day, he plunged 40 feet from a burning building – a fire which killed two firefighters and critically injured DiBernardo Jr. and three more. The names of the two who died that day already are up on the Wall of Heroes at the headquarters of the Fire Department of New York, which honors those who have died in the line of duty…

Breaking Down the 2012-13 Budget: Miller Place

Patch takes a closer look at Miller Place's adopted budget for the 2012-'13 fiscal year.

School Budget votes are just days away, and on May 15 residents will flock to the polls. Throughout the next few days, Patch will break down the budget of each local school district. The newly installed New York State tax levy cap adds a new wrinkle to school budgets this year. Districts are not allowed to increase the tax levy by over two percent (exact number varies per district), and if they do, the budget can only pass by a supermajority of 60 percent. Miller Place residents will vote on a $64,954,995 budget, an increase of 1.09 percent from the current school year. The budget remains within the tax levy cap, which comes out to 2.96 percent, a total allowable levy of $41,300,365. State Aid is projected at $18,332,434, an increase of $…

Wait till the right of way behind McDonald's is extended to the new Walgreens ! I see another "red light camera" coming to this intersection, very soon. The surrounding roads with "Don't Turn On Red" signs, are already 'camera-ed" or made ready for their conversion. With Route 25A and Hallock Landing up in Rocky Point with one, it's inevitable.   more ›
