Superintendent Explains New Electives Process in Rocky Point

New process has caused confusion among some parents, students, Ring said.

A change in the electives process in Rocky Point High School resulted in a belief by some that electives were being eliminated, Superintendent Michael Ring said. Ring spoke with Patch after Monday's Board of Education meeting and explained that a new process was enacted in order to let students know which elective courses they may or may not receive as soon as possible, as opposed to in the past where requests would be made at the end of spring but the schedules wouldn't run until the summer. "This year we said to students, we know how many seats we have available for each elective, we're not going to let ourselves get to more than the number of seats we have," Ring said. What was actually said to students was " you have to drop an elective to take mandatory lunch period"it was not one elective that was cut because dream weaver along with a calculus was droped. Also the seniors Are now required to stay the whole day so they fill up there null schedule with electives leaving no room for other students. Award Winners in Rocky Point School District

Teachers, students earn awards.

Joseph A. Edgar students were named winners in a National Dental Video contest and Frank J. Carasiti Elementary School teacher Catherine Conner recently received a Mentoring Achievement Award from the Mentoring Partnership of Long Island. Under the direction of Technology Integration Specialist Laurie Varriale, reading teacher Peter Costa, art teacher Katerina Kyriakakis, and Executive Director of Educational Services Susan Wilson, students in Joy Abbato's third-grade class wrote and filmed a video entitled “Pearly Whites” which won first placethe New York State Dental Health Association Contest for their age group. North Country Road Students Host Poetry Tea

Students share poetry books with parents Friday morning.

Sixth grade English students at the North Country Road Middle School hosted a Poetry Tea in the cafeteria Friday morning as 20 volunteers read their posts aloud before enjoying tea and cookies. First-year English teacher Allison Brenner organized the event after her students spend two months on a poetry unit where they researched free verses, haikus, chinquaints and more forms of poetry. "This is their chance to display it to their parents and everyone else in the grade which is a nice thing for them to be able to do," Brenner said. "The kids created a poetry book called All About Me, basically scrap books of all the things they’ve found during the poetry unit." 20 volunteer presenters read their poems in front of the parents and teachers …

Miller Place Students' Anti Bullying Video Creates Buzz

Video to be aired at red carpet event in Patchogue Wednesday.

An anti-bullying video made by Miller Place High School students has stood out and become the face of a Suffolk County anti-violence program. The video, created for the 2011 Student and Youth Prevention Film Project, will be aired along with 24 other films at a Red Carpet Event at the Patchogue Theatre on Wednesday, April 13. Miller Place's has stood out among the pack and the likeness of Katrina Svoboda, the star of the film, will be used as the face of the campaign. "It was definitely a stand out," said Jennifer Freeman, organizer of the event. "We previewed these films with the film commission and they really caught on to the Miller Place one. It was very powerful and I reached out to Katrina to use a freeze frame of the film as the …

A lot of lesson learned from this wonderful video. A must see to educate students that bullying can impact someones life in a manner debilitating or deadly. This video is a good tool to fight and stop bullying in school or places where bullying exist. Great job Ambrose!   more ›

Rocky Point Senior Receives Rudolph Scholarship

Nicolette Galante one of eight college-bound students to earn award.

Rocky Point senior Nicolette Galante was one of eight college-bound students to earn the prestigious Rudolph Scholarship for Academic Excellence due to her impressive academic and extracurricular accomplishments. Galante earned a 100.28 percent weighted grade point average and is expected to graduate this spring with an Advanced Regents diploma. She has taken Advanced Placement classes and is also a member of the National Honor Society. Along with her academic accomplishments, Galante is also a violinist with the Rocky Point High School Chamber Orchestra and the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra, as well as first violinist with the Suffolk Concert Orchestra. Rocky Point Students Raise Money for American Heart Association, Madagascar Anziky Fund

Students raise money through charitable events, compete in Science Bowl.

Students in the Rocky Point School District have been busy; from raising money for the American Heart Association and Madagascar Anziky Fund to participating in the Brookhaven National Laboratory Science Bowl. Students at Joseph A. Edgar School raised $7,770 for the American Heart Association through the annual Jump Rope for Heart event held in the school's gymnasium. Around 150 students in third, fourth and fifth grade competed in class-level contests where winners earned a trophy. Third-grader Kenneth Massa raised the greatest amount of funds totaling $1,795. Snacks were also donated and a Chinese Auction also took place. “This is a great event," Phys-ed Teacher Maria Amoscato said. "Not only do the students demonstrate a commitment …
